"A storm is coming!" Someone yelled from above.
Many of the men ran here and there altered by the way the sky was. Everything was very dark, the black clouds above us were in charge of creating that effect while they were accompanied by cloudy, almost violent waters. The boat shook every time it was hit by the strong waves and caused us to end up falling. At this point we were all soaked water was splashing everywhere and the deck was full of water.
"Brace yourselves, we're about to enter the eye of the storm!" Camila yelled from her place at the helm.
And as if they had agreed, it began to rain. Everything more violent with every second that passed. The ship was still shaking from how rough the water was. To everything that was happening was added the strong gusts of wind, which could be a very dangerous combination in our situation.
I staggered on the deck after a wave hit us. Due to the poor visibility I had due to the wind and rain, I groped my way without really knowing where to go, the only thing I wanted at that moment was to be able to hold onto anything that would keep me safe. I took a few more steps until I felt my body collide with something, that destabilized me and when I wanted to realize it I was about to fall off the side of the boat. Fortunately they had taken me by the shirt leaving me in a not very pleasant position.
"Damn," I heard Dinah say through her teeth.
"Please don't let me go," I begged fearfully, watching the water rocking wildly beneath me.
I clung to her supporting arm, she made an effort and pulled me with both hands to lead me back to the firmness of the deck. I dropped to the ground gasping a little. Then I fixed my gaze on the blonde who was looking at me annoyed.
"My God, don't fall down!"
But I was still stunned by what had just happened to pay attention to her threat. I was sure my body was shaking and not necessarily from cold. It had been exactly a month since I had awakened on this ship, a month in which I had to learn to defend myself next to Camila. She taught me many things in all this time that had passed, not just how to use a sword. But I had never been in a big storm like this before, we had been through similar situations before even with the rain although not of such magnitude. Everything seemed so unreal to me, I had never imagined that I would end up on a ship at sea in the middle of a storm.
I was experiencing something totally contradictory compared to my "real life". The library where I worked was by far the most boring place and it was also the safest place he wanted to be right now. Nothing like the tranquility of an old library. I allowed myself to fantasize a bit about the kind of life I led before this and began to miss her.
"What are you doing?. Get up from there" Dinah shouted again, undoing my fantasy and pulling my arm.
She didn't care if she was being very rude, she just did. Once on my feet I tried to stay that way but because of the agitation of the boat it was almost impossible. The feeling of dizziness seized me and the urge to vomit became more and more frequent.
"I think I'm going to throw up," I told the girl, leaving one hand on my stomach and the other on my mouth.
"By no means go overboard," she said in a growl.
Our relationship was somewhat strange, I hadn't advanced much since I had arrived but at least now she didn't look at me as if she wanted to kill me like she did before and I think that was already a lot.
With no other option, I agreed to what she had said, anyway I did not want to fall and lose myself in the depths of the sea. I still wanted to go on living and also find out why I was in this place.
In fear I looked around, everyone was holding on to something, including Dinah who had left my side to make sure to keep Normani safe while holding onto the mast. In a sudden movement the whole boat shook due to a great wave that hit the bow and sent me roughly to the ground. I let out small groans that were soon silenced by a scream that was heard nearby. I raised my head looking for the source of that scream and came across the image of Camila hanging upside down from the railing and Shawn trying to hold her up.
Again the ship shook and managed to make the boy let go of the brunette. Containing my urge to vomit and the pain, I made an effort to get up and ran to her as best I could. Fortunately I managed to catch her in time.
"Are you okay?" I asked, wanting to make sure she was really okay.
Her eyes that had been closed slowly opened to meet mine, then she just nodded her head. She still looked beautiful, despite the raindrops that fell on us that made her hair stick to her face. It didn't matter what she looked like, every time I looked at her she always looked beautiful. I had checked all these days by being by his side.
"You can put me down now," she said after a while and clearing her throat.
"Yeah, of course. Excuse me ..." I replied while doing what she asked me to do.
I looked away from her wanting to focus on something else and just at that moment I watched as three men fell into the water. Screams and grunts were heard as some helped others to stay inside the ship. I felt a strong grip on my forearm which made me look there. One hand was holding on tight, digging in her nails as well. I looked up to see Camila who was staring straight ahead, watching her men struggle not to fall. Her brow was furrowed, her lips were tight, and her jaw was set.
"Camila?" I spoke trying to ignore the pain her nails were causing on my skin.
She seemed to come out of her trance and only then did she release my arm. She muttered some rudeness, heading back to the wheel. As soon as the brunette took control the boat changed direction.
"Look out!" Shawn yelled.
A large wave had formed in front of us. The ship began to tilt up the great body of water. The rain had not stopped and the water that fell on the deck did not help much, since it made the job of supporting ourselves more difficult. With each second that we advanced on the immense wave, it became more difficult to breathe, my vision blurred and the nausea returned to me again. The fear grew stronger when we finally reached the top of the wave, giving way to a feeling of emptiness inside me. And as they say: "everything that goes up must come down".
Time seemed to slow down at the time, as the ship began to plummet. Due to fear I had forgotten to hold onto something and the next thing that happened was that I was also falling. I did not scream, nor did I try to make any kind of movement that could stop my fall, I just looked at the place where I would fall. It looked so cold, so gloomy. And then I closed my eyes.
"Lauren!" I heard a shout in the distance.
A strong blow to my stomach made me open my eyes again, letting me see that I had been caught by a large arm which soon hit me against his body. Surprised, I looked up at Gerd's face, which only made a grunt. He was gripping the mast tightly with his other arm.
The ship came down with a loud bang on the bow splashing water in large quantities and bathing us completely. That didn't really matter though, not now.
And I just passed out.
