There were three boats with about eight men rowing to the island, including the one I was on. Only half of the crew traveled, without taking into account the women who were in charge of the kitchen. I still didn't understand why Camila wanted me to come on this suicide mission, one of my tasks on the ship apart from cleaning was helping in the kitchen and I didn't see any of the cooks in any of the boats.
I was the only one.
And I would have complained to her for having brought me if at this moment I weren't shaking like a sick woman while rowing. I didn't know why I was doing it, if I was shaking with fear that I was about to face some armed Frenchmen or if I was shaking because of what had been about to happen between the two of us when we were in the cabin. I really didn't know, maybe it could be both.
I looked to the side where one of the boats was, Gerd was rowing along with the others. Never before had I wished to have him as close as now, the big man could row alone and without problems. I sighed, letting out a bit of air that I was holding. My arms were beginning to feel tired and even though I had other men rowing with me, the work was still heavy.
"Is there much left?" I asked, throwing my head back, closing my eyes but still moving my arms.
It was in the opposite direction to the island so I couldn't see how far we were going. All I could look at was Camila sitting next to Shawn and our boat in the background. The two of them were talking in a low voice, pointing to a map that the brunette was holding in her hands. I had to admit that I didn't like the way the boy approached her, putting a hand on her shoulder and speaking very close to her face. That's why I tried to distract myself with anything so as not to look at them.
What if Camila knew I had slept with Shawn? What if she already had? If so, didn't it bother you? Did they have something, were they friends with rights?
My head was filling with questions like that and I couldn't bear it. Fortunately a growl interrupted my line of thought.
"Shut up and keep rowing," Dinah said between grunts. "We'll be there soon if you move those scrawny arms you have."
Had she said scrawny?
"My arms don't ..."
"Just shut up!"
I jumped in my seat in surprise, her gaze was fixed on me and it was not pleasant at all. I was sure that if I said one more word, she would take care of throwing me into the sea. I looked away to meet a pair of brown eyes that were on me. Only a few minutes passed before Shawn turned his attention back to Camila, who hadn't realized that he wasn't listening to her.
I didn't want to think about why she was looking at me like that, I wouldn't let my head fill with more questions again, so I looked at my shoes as I paddled.
Some time later we stopped with the task when we were close enough to the beach. Dinah ordered us to get off the boat and wait for the others. The other two boats with the remaining crew were not long in arriving. Once we were all gathered, they dragged the boats further into the beach to prevent the sea from taking them away.
Dinah started yelling some instructions that I wasn't listening to. Now that we were here, I couldn't help feeling nervous.
What was I going to do if I ran into a Frenchman?
Putting a hand to my stomach trying to calm me down, the nausea was taking over me and I could already feel the sweat coming down my forehead. Breathe deeply.
"Hey pretty eyes, calm down" they said at my side "You don't have to worry" she looked at me with a smile.
"Not? They'll kill me right away!" I answered excitedly, ignoring the different sensations she caused in me.
