We walked in silence as we made our way to meet the corsairs. Night had fallen therefore we were lit by a pair of torches. One of them was carried by Camila in front of the group and the other was in the hands of Shawn, who was walking behind everyone. We weren't supposed to get so much attention that way, although I still had my doubts. I couldn't believe that two lights in the middle of a forest wouldn't catch someone's eye, it was just impossible that they wouldn't.
In the distance you could hear howls of what I assumed were monkeys, crickets singing and of course the sound that our footsteps made against the branches and dry leaves. As we progressed it gave me the feeling that they were watching us but I decided to ignore it, they were probably my ideas due to the fear I felt. My head was working too hard at the moment, imagining different situations of how we could end up ...
And none of us did well.
I swallowed thickly, shaking my head to try and push the negative thoughts away.
I heard something right next to me, it had been a movement in the undergrowth. I stopped for a moment to look but because of how dark it was and despite having a little help with the torches, I couldn't see anything. With fear I moved away from there, placing myself more at the center of the group. Maybe that way I would feel a little more secure.
Suddenly a scream made me jump and I stayed where I was, motionless.
"What was that?" I asked no one in particular, looking in all directions.
A hand on my lower back caused me to jump a little and gasp.
"Quiet, they are only the natives of the island" Shawn told me with a smile "If you want you can stay by my side. Nothing will happen to you, I will take care of you" he finished, extending his hand.
Well this was a bit strange given the situation in which we found ourselves and I did not refer to this moment precisely, but rather to what had happened a couple of nights ago of which I still did not remember anything at all. Things like this made me confirm that I was right.
Another scream.
"Fuck it ..." I took his hand tightening it with more force than necessary.
I heard him laugh next to me but I didn't care, fear was stronger. I told myself that if we managed to survive, I should clear everything up with him.
All the way I spent him holding his hand and when we finally saw some kind of camp, he let me go. Getting a little closer I could notice the log cabins and small makeshift tents. Only a few men were prowling around, complying with their night watch. The remaining men were probably all sleeping, which was good for us since it would give us an advantage over them in a way.
Camila gave orders in a low voice and soon everyone rushed to carry them out. They started lighting more torches, now almost the entire crew had one. The brunette stood in front of the group and with a cry raised her sword, implying that it was time. Immediately her men imitated her war cry, running towards the French camp. Among all that sea of pirates I ended up being swept away, staying out of the forest that previously hid us.
I watched with horror as some members of the crew attacked the guys we had seen minutes before while others were in charge of burning the tents and cabins. The heartbreaking screams were immediate, indicating that the massacre had already begun. And I couldn't do anything but freeze in my place. The French began to get out of their beds, coughing and covering their noses in the smoke from the fire.
I looked around again, it was like a scene taken from some movie. Lifeless bodies on the ground, guys fighting with their swords, blood everywhere and screaming, that was what was happening right now.
