"Hey pretty eyes" she called me when I came out of the kitchen.
It was not necessary to look to know who it had been, only one person in this place called me that.
"What do you want, Camila?" I asked somewhat tiredly.
Without Normani here the kitchen seemed a total chaos, we all ran here and there trying to get everything ready for dinner. Fortunately we managed to prepare everything on time, getting the crew to like what we had cooked. We only had to clean up the mess from the kitchen, which we had barely finished cleaning.
"Let's practice," she answered, placing herself in front of me, with her hands on her hips.
Her voice strong and firm, without any tone of question in it. I sighed.
"Look, we'd better save it for another day," I said, starting to walk.
I had one goal in mind and that was to get to the cabins. As I passed her one of her hands traveled to my arm, stopping my walk. Her grip was consistent but she still didn't put too much force on it. I looked for a second at her hand on my arm and then raised my eyes to her. She was already staring at me, looking totally engrossed as she did so. Her mouth was slightly ajar and I could see how slowly her cheeks began to take color. Perhaps realizing that all this time she had been staring at me.
It was the first time I had seen her blush like that in all this time that we had been together and it made me something fascinating because without a doubt she was adorable.
She shook her head, pulling away from me as quickly as she had come out of her trance. She cleared her throat a bit, reverting to her tough girl attitude.
"No, we are going to practice now" she spoke again with a firm tone "In a few days we will be facing a group of French corsairs, they will not hesitate to kill you if they see you helpless. It won't be like every night you practice with a wooden pole on the deck, Lauren. This is completely different, I don't know where you come from but things are done like this here. Fight and live or not fight and die, it's simple" she finished her speech with a frown.
Everything she said chilled me and made me realize one thing in that moment.
She was trying to make me fight!
All this time I thought those nights on deck were just some kind of self-defense class, something that would serve me well in an emergency. She wasn't ready for this, she couldn't even beat Dinah the way she expected her to beat a group of men.
What could someone who worked in a library do?
Exactly, nothing. Absolutely nothing.
"No ..." I whispered as I shook my head and took a few steps back. "I will not fight with anyone, Camila. Shit ... I'm not going to kill anyone," I said horrified after thinking a bit.
I remembered that time they fought the Spanish, there was a lot of blood and bodies scattered all over the deck of the ship. And clearly I didn't want to end up like those men. She said to fight and live or not to fight and die, I didn't want to fight but I did want to live.
Shit.
"You will fight" she spoke without any doubt "It is an order."
"No, I won't."
I was about to turn around when a hand on my shoulder stopped me. My body tensed at the sight of the large hand with small scars and made it even more when I heard a growl behind my back. Frozen in place, I swallowed thick.
"Thank you, Gerd" said a smiling Camila to the great guy "It's time to practice" she addressed me without losing her smile.
It seemed strange but now the brunette looked much calmer after hearing that growl.
