I began to wake up to the squawking of seagulls and the bad smell of fish. I was in motion and every time I moved forward I swayed to the sides. My arms fell while my legs felt a grip. There was a bustle wherever it was, you could hear people talking, others shouting and if you paid attention you could hear the wheels of the carts and the footsteps of the horses on the road. I decided it was time to open my eyes so awkwardly I took one of my hands to rub them and slowly I opened them. At first I thought that I could continue somewhat stunned by what I had lived but as soon as I blinked a couple of times I knew this was true.
Shit, I was hanging up!
I saw a big back and made an effort to see who was the subject that was taking me. But at the slightest movement a growl came from the guy's throat.
"Gerd," I said on a tired sigh.
I tried to move again this time ignoring the growls on his part and I could see him looking over his shoulder at me with a frown. It was either that or he was looking at my ass.
"Hey big guy, why don't you put me down?" I already woke up and I can walk alone.
Of course I received a growl although this time louder and more terrifying than the others. But they no longer had the same effect on me.
"Put me down now!" I'm not a sack of potatoes! Let me down I tell you!" I spoke hitting his back with my fists and struggling to free my legs, that only made his grip on them increase "Camila, I want to see Camila. Where is she?."
This time I did not receive his characteristic answer so I had no choice but to let myself be carried away by the great man. I couldn't fight this mole and I knew he would completely ignore me. So I decided to accommodate myself in a better way to be able to observe the place where we were. Not far away I could see the coast, where many boats were seen. Some were just setting sail while others prepared to arrive in port or simply stayed nearby, navigating the coast.
The next thing I saw was a kind of market. There were different stalls with men and women yelling things that I couldn't understand. All offering the things they sold, from food and weapons to slaves. And as we advanced you could see houses and small shops, although not very decent to say the least.
"Hi Lauren" I turned my head to look at the person who had greeted me and I found a smiling brunette.
"Mani!" I said happy to see her in front of me.
Normani had become a good friend in my stay on the ship that month, she had been very kind since I had woken up there. Maybe that was what made me trust her so quickly.
"It's good that you woke up, you had us worried. You feel good?."
"Yes, very good but Gerd doesn't understand" I answered a little louder "Please tell him that he can put me down. I need to walk, it's been a month that I haven't touched solid ground" I looked at her pleadingly hoping to get some help.
She sighed and shook her head.
"Not?. Why not?" I asked without understanding her action.
"Camila's orders," she replied with a shrug.
"Camila's orders" I repeated in a bad mood "Can you know where the hell she is?"
With a gesture with her head, the Brunette told me to look straight ahead. With a lot of effort I managed to accommodate myself to be able to look at the indicated place and indeed, there she was. On her right side walked Dinah and to her left Shawn walked with another man I hadn't seen before. Or at least I didn't know that profile, but I was pretty sure he hadn't been on the ship. The three seemed to be discussing something important as they looked serious. When Camila finished speaking the two men nodded and turned off the road, into a narrow and dirty street.
I returned my gaze to the front where I noticed that several of the men in the crew were following the brunette but they were very few, I could say less than half. That made me question one thing.
What had happened after I passed out?
I turned back to my original position, tilted my head to look at Normani who was walking with her hands behind her back while humming a song.
"Hey, Mani" I called her "Where are the others ?.
Her face changed giving way to a sad expression that was accompanied by a growl from the man who was carrying me.
"The few who survived went home to their families. The ones that don't have it, they stay close," she explained.
So they had died, first the attack on the Spanish ship and now the storm. That left Camila's crew to almost nothing.
Would that mean that there would be no more trips?
I denied that possibility, they were pirates after all and they did not stop to mourn the death of others, they were rude guys. At least that was what they had in mind.
I decided to clear my throat to change the subject since it seemed that it was a delicate thing for Normani to talk about it. I had no idea what my relationship with others would have been like but you could tell I was fond of them.
"Uhm, could you tell me where we are going?"
Her mood seemed to change completely and she was once again showing her bright smile.
"We will go to Ally's tavern," she replied happily, shaking her head. "It's not very far, don't worry."
With a sigh, I dropped down and was taken by Gerd to this Ally's blissful tavern. Maybe a drink would do me good.
On the way I dedicated myself to looking around me. Everything was so far away, so different from what I knew. There were no large buildings or those piles of cars that I was used to seeing, instead there were small houses, people on horseback, guys with swords hanging from their waists and some other loaded carts.
After several minutes of travel, which for me were eternal, we arrived at a small establishment that was a bit ruined. Above, there was a sign on the ceiling with Allyson's name written on it. And only then in front of the door of that place did the big guy take me down, although he was not at all delicate when he did. Awkwardly I stood upright, staggering at first from the feeling of stepping on solid ground. Totally different from when we were on the ship.
Normani who had not left my side came to help me in the event that my legs failed. I noticed that everyone started to enter the tavern, even Gerd had already done so except for Dinah and Camila. The first one stood in front of the door while the brunette approached us.
"Have you got the dagger?" She asked in a low voice, very close to me.
I nodded without being able to stop looking at her, every time I looked at her I found her more beautiful and my desire to taste her lips grew.
"Well, use it only if necessary," she said in the same low tone and then left.
Again I nodded again. The memory of how she had given me that dagger came to my mind. It was one night when we were practicing on deck. We had stopped for a break and then she came up to me and handed me the dagger wrapped in an old handkerchief. The first thing I had said when I saw her was:
"You know it could kill you right?"
But instead of being surprised or scared she smiled.
"You need more than that to kill me, much more"
That had been her answer.
After that we had continued our routine as normal. And we never mentioned anything about it. The next day she advised me to keep the weapon in an inconspicuous place so I hid it inside my right boot, that had been the only place where it did not make me feel uncomfortable or sting.
"Come on pretty," Normani took my hand, dragging me into the tavern with her.
