It took us about fifteen minutes to get Kia changed. The poor girl aches so badly, she can hardly move today. It worried me greatly. I suggested taking her to see a doctor, but of course she refused.
We stepped inside of Matt's kitchen to find my dad and his best friend Jacob since middle school, drinking coffee at the breakfast bar.
My dad had been laughing at something Jacob had said, but that quickly turned to a frown when he saw Kia. Kia squeezed my hand nervously under my father's gaze. I rubbed my thumb over the top of her hand to try and soothe her.
My dad stood from the breakfast bar and walked over to Kia, his gaze never leaving her.
"0h god, sweetheart." My dad whispered.
"It's not as bad as it looks." Kia whispered.
"Can I see?" My dad asked, pointing at her neck.
Kia nodded and moved her hair out of the way. My dad stared for a long moment, then looked over at me. Matt had walked into the kitchen with Alaina about then as well.
"That son of a bitch puts his hands on Kia or Alaina again, I'll fucking kill him myself." My dad snarled to me.
Shit, normally he is the one who calms everyone down. The tables have turned. I'm not sure how to calm down my own father.
Thank god Jacob cleared his throat to get everyone's attention just then. Jacob smiled at us, stepping forward a little.
"I'm sorry. This is Jacob. Jacob is the chief of police." My dad said to everyone.
"Hi Kia. I'm Jacob." He said, extending his hand to her.
"Nice to meet you." She said softly, shaking his hand.
"Alaina, correct?" Jacob asked Alaina, shaking her hand as well.
"Yes, sir. Nice to meet you." She smiled.
"Ladies, the reason I'm here is to make sure this piece of shit goes to prison. That's where he should of been long ago, judging by all of the arrests on his record for domestic violence. A total of twelve times and no prison time is unacceptable for me." Jacob said to us.
Well, that was new information to me. I remember Kia said something about he would be out a few days after being arrested in the past. I glanced at Kia, whose face is turning red.
"It's ok, sweetheart." I whispered in her ear.
"Kia, how often did Carlos hit you when you were together?" Jacob asked.
All of us became rather uncomfortable when he asked this. This is something Kia and I have never even discussed.
"Hey Matt? Maybe we could give them a few minutes?" My dad asked him.
"Yeah, of course. Come down to the studio." Matt grinned, taking Alaina's hand.
Once they were gone, Jacob held a hand out to us to sit at the table. Kia is ready to bolt out the door. She doesn't need to say it. I can just see it in her eyes.
"Baby, no matter how bad it is, it changes nothing about how I feel towards you or our relationship. I did this so you could be safe. I'm sorry, I should of asked you first." I told her.
"A heads up would of been nice." She said coldly.
I deserved that. I openly admit that I do. But, I also knew she wouldn't let me do it. I had to take charge in this situation.
"The last three years we were married, it seemed to grow a little more each month. Carlos became a raging alcoholic the last year we were married. The last six months were the worst. He hit me every day." Kia said, looking away.
