Childhood Flashback - roughly age 14

The sun was shining outside and it was such a beautiful day. You were helping your mother and little sister make cookies. The three of you had plans to go to the park later on for a picnic. You had cracked an egg into the batter and started to whisk it into the forming dough.

There was a knock on the door and your sister, Kyoko ran to answer it. "Oh hey, Fuyumi!"

"Hey! I was coming to ask if you and your sister wanted to come by for a while. My brothers and I are going to feed the koi in the pond." She smiled and peered around your sister to wave at you.

You quickly washed your hands and asked your mom if you could go. "Of course honey. I'll finish these up and when you two are finished we can pack the basket for our picnic."

You and Kyoko walked over with Fuyumi. Your sister was going on about the big koi they had in their pond that she'd seen the last time and hoped to see it again. When you reached the pond in their massive fenced-in yard, her brothers were already waiting. Natsuo was pulling on a string to open the bag of food. Touya was standing there kicking smaller rocks on the outer edge into the pond. Fuyumi called to them as you walked up and their heads snapped up.

Touya looked at you through his shaggy white hair and you looked away to hide your flushed cheeks. You had been crushing on Fuyumi's older brother for a while, but you didn't want to tell your best friend you liked her brother. That was weird, right? He grinned and waved at you. You returned the wave.

Kyoko ran over and cheered as Natsuo pulled the string the rest of the way to open the bag. He stood up straight with an accomplished look on his face and chuckled. The two of them grabbed a handful of food and scattered it into the pond. Kyoko giggled as the koi began to nibble at the food on the surface of the pond.

"Go on, Y/N! Your turn!" Natsuo pointed to the bag.

Touya had walked over by the bag and was reaching in. You stood on the other side, waiting for your turn. He looked up at you and dropped the food he was holding. "Oh, um, sorry. You can go first." He chuckled and you thought you saw his cheeks flush pink. Up close you noticed a bandage on his cheek.

"Touya, what happened to your face?" You started to reach for it, but he flinched back and looked away quickly.

"It's nothing... Just a little accident when I was at Sheoto Peak. I'm fine." He looked back at you and grinned slightly.

You nodded and reached your hand in to grab a handful of food. Touya reached in after you and the two of you scattered your handfuls of fish food into the pond. He stood so close to you that when he dropped his hand back to his side, his fingers brushed against yours. You blushed and your eyes widened. You glanced over at him and he was smiling at you with a soft look in his beautiful turquoise eyes.

The sound of someone clearing their throat from behind you all drew your attention. Touya's eyes snapped to the source and you took a step away from him, clasping your hands together in front of you.

"Hello children. Don't feed them too much." Endeavor's voice boomed behind all of you. He nodded a greeting and began to walk away.

Touya called to him as he ran to his father. "Dad, you're home early! If you have time, I want to show you something!" He sounded so proud and happy. You wondered what it was.

Endeavor barely turned back to glance at his son as he looked at him down his nose. "Touya, if it's what we discussed yesterday I already told you I will not entertain it." His tone was hard and cold.

You watched as Touya flinched from his fathers words. His fists clenched at his sides and he looked at the ground. You watched as his fists shook with frustration before he snapped his head back up. "Just give me a chance! I've been working so hard..."

The pain in his voice pulled at your heart strings. You stood there in silence, watching the two of them.

Endeavor scoffed and turned away. You heard his deep voice say something while his back was turned, but you couldn't make out the words. He continued to walk up to the Todoroki manor leaving Touya standing there on the path.

Touya began to radiate a low blue flame as he stood there in anger. You gasped and his head snapped back to where you were all standing by the pond. The low flames dissipated and he briefly met your gaze. You watched as he chewed his lip and turned his head. You took a step in his direction. You wanted to ask if he was ok...

"Y/N! Look! There's the really big one I was talking about!" Your sister pulled at your hand and pointed at the pond. You looked over and saw a huge koi on the surface taking gulps of the kibble on the water's surface.

You nodded and marveled at the massive fish. "Wow!" You turned to motion for Touya to join you again, but he was gone. You furrowed your brows in confusion. Where did he go?

Fuyumi tossed some food into the pond and the rest of you watched as the fish ate every piece until it was all gone.

You and Kyoko ran back home to help your mom pack the picnic basket. The three of you packed some sandwiches, chips, drinks, and the freshly baked cookies and headed out to the park. When you arrived, you helped your mother lay out the red and white plaid blanket on the ground. You all ate your lunch and enjoyed the sun beaming down on you on the warm beautiful day.

After some time, you noticed the birds had stopped chirping. You looked around and felt the hair on the back of your neck rise with unease. Your mother grabbed your hand as you looked around. When you looked at her, she had a frantic look on her face. "Mom?" She was looking off in the distance and you followed her gaze.

You saw a blazing wildfire rising over the hills at the distant edge of the park. People were running from the other side of the park. Your sister screamed and clung to your mother.

"It's ok, honey. The flames won't reach us, but we need to go." Your mom began throwing things into the basket and pulled your sister up from the blanket. "Y/N." You were sat there frozen as you watched the fire spread. "Y/N!" She gripped your arm and shook you back into reality.

You scrambled to your feet and began to follow your mother back to the car. Your gaze kept going back to the burning hills as you drudged behind them. You were sweating and panting heavy breathes as the realization came over you...the flames were blue.

There was a memorial service for Touya the following week. No one knew what had really happened...they just called it a quirk accident. His mother sat next to Endeavor at the memorial. She was a mess of tears as she sobbed into her hands. Endeavor patted her shoulder but didn't say a word. Fuyumi and Natsuo were quietly talking with their younger brother, Shoto, who you rarely saw outside when you went over to their house.

At the end of the service, his family placed flowers on his grave. People began to leave and your mother beckoned for you and your sister.

"Hang on...I want to leave him something, too." You walked over to his gravestone. The sun was bright today, too. It seemed wrong and out of place during such a somber event. "I'm sorry, Touya."

A small tear fell from the corner of your eye. You drew light from the sunshine beating down and formed a small koi fish. It was solid and had a dim glow of residual light. You placed it beside all the beautiful flowers there. You reached up to wipe the tears from your eyes and turned back to join your parents and sister.

Endeavor was watching you and you looked in his direction, having felt the gaze of someone. He walked over to your parents and nodded. "That's an impressive quirk your daughter seems to have. Make sure she trains safely and effectively." His voice broke slightly as his voice trailed off.

"Yes sir. Y/N is planning to take the exams at UA next year. We're very proud of her." Your father nodded and placed his hand on your shoulder.

He nodded before walking back to his family. That was the first time you had ever seen a glint of compassion in that man throughout the entire time you had known the Todoroki family.

You glanced over your shoulder once more at the gravestone engraved with his name before your parents ushered you into the car and you drove away.
