A/N : This oneshot takes place post-book 10

Petey felt drained. It had been quite the day. Lil Petey and Molly had been really annoying for hours, his news feature didn't go quite as smoothly as he was hoping, of course there was the giant sippy cup incident... But all that was normal at this point. Crazy kids and oversized objects destroying the city was pretty average. That wasn't why he was drained.

No... He was drained for another, more personal reason. His father had decided to pay a visit while he was away and he came back to see his lab in shambles. His lab... Everything he had ever worked for, the only solid thing he had after his mom died... It was just a pile of debris now, all because his shitty father decided to commit a heist for lord knows what.

Every time Petey felt like he was getting somewhere with his life, something had to come back and tear it apart.

Now he, Lil Petey, and 80-HD were staying with Dog Man of all people. That brought along it's own unique set of chaos, as Dog Man really loved to lean into the whole dog thing. Petey loved him, of course. He took care of Lil Petey half the time and he was nice to talk to (or more talk at and get occasional barks in response) and they were close, but he's still a dog.

Dogs are just so... Extra. Cats are schemers. They are analytical and they thought things through (well, most of them do). Dogs on the other hand are much more hands on. They don't think things through. Of course, this also meant that they could occasionally be the better candidate to save lives. They just go for it, regardless of if there is a better solution because sometimes there just isn't time for the better solution

Anyways...

Lil Petey was asleep and 80-HD was turned off for the night. The only people still awake in the dog house were Petey and Dog Man. Just the way God intended Petey thought with a small chuckle. It was then that he spotted something sat up against the wall in the corner... Mom's ukulele

He slowly got up and walked over to it, picking it up and giving it a quiet strum. Tears came to his eyes as memories of his mother filled his head. He forced him back and walked outside, taking the ukulele with him. He sat roughly 10 feet outside of the dog house, just looking up at the stars. Maybe she's looking down on me right now he thought to himself, tears falling now

"Are you proud of me, mom?" he asked the sky. Of course, no response came. "Are you still proud of your little boy, mom? Or have you finally given up on me?" he asked, voice cracking with emotion. His mom always forgave him when he was little and got angry. It was a small layer of security that he always felt. That no matter how much he fucked up, his mom would still love him...

But then she died

"Do you still forgive me, mom!?" he yelled, standing up now. He felt so many emotions and didn't know what to make of them. It was a dangerous cocktail of sadness and anger and grief and just... A lot

Dog Man stood in the doorway of his home, looking at the sobbing cat. It took a lot of self-control to not run up and tackle him in a puddle of dog kisses. Since he couldn't speak, all of his affections were physical. Alas, this made it a bit more tricky with Petey, who got jumpy when touched

However, when Petey's knees buckles, Dog Man could no longer stop himself from running up. He was half expecting to get shouted at by the feline. Told to go away, Dog Man. That's what people often said to him when he ran up. He had grown used to it. But, Petey didn't do that. Instead of shouting, he got hugged by the sobbing cat

Dog Man just silently rubbed Petey's back, letting him get the feelings out. Sometimes, a person just needed a good old cry. Dog Man understood this quite well. He couldn't cry himself but he had witnessed several of Chief's breakdowns, so he understood.

Eventually, Petey stopped crying and wordlessly pulled away from the hug, picking up the ukulele. Dog Man curled up next to him, and Petey did nothing to suppress the smile that came to his face. You'd like him, mom Petey thought to himself He's a good one

He plucked at the strings a few times to get it in tune, and then he quietly played and sang a song. It was a lullaby that his mother would always play when he was little and couldn't sleep. Hell, even when he was tired, his mom still tucked him in properly and sang the song. She was always so caring like that. Deep down, Petey wanted to be as good a parent one day, or at least as close as he could. Dog Man smiled, beginning to drift off to the lullaby that was being played, and for once...

All was peaceful
