House after house zoomed by until there were none left to pass. The land opened into fields of tall, dead grass cut only by the snowy road they were on.
This was it. They were almost to the border of their territory. While it wasn't entirely safe outside of it, they would be past the fighting and into a better area.
The edge was right there. The car touched it, the bumper even crossed it, but something came from their right too quickly to see. The car immediately jumped into the air, spinning awkwardly from its newly bent shape and then landing with a force that would've splattered anyone not in the protection of a metal frame.
Jungkook gasped, groaned, then coughed. His head turned with much struggle, searching for Taehyung. His hands reached out in desperation, only finding satisfaction when they landed on the omega's chest that rapidly rose and fell. "Tae.. are you okay?"
"I think so." Taehyung coughed violently from the force sent through his body. "My head hurts..."
Jungkook unbuckled them both and slid them out of the totaled car. He set Taehyung down and then went to check on the adults. They were both alive and conscious, though their situation seemed to be worse than his had been. Mr. Kim's body was slumped against the airbag, blood staining the white of its material. A large piece of glass from the windshield had lodged itself in his shoulder. Mrs. Kim was groaning and struggling to get out. Part of the car had wrapped itself around her legs. He quickly pulled Taehyung's father out and then ran around to help his mother, but horror hit his stomach with a force stronger than what'd sent them spinning. He barely managed to hold in the bile riding in his throat at what he saw.
The thing that'd hit the car was still stuck to it, splattered all across the side of it. Chunks of fur and skin were strewn across the path their car had made in the grass. More pieces of flesh covered the side of the car. Something had thrown this wolf at them with so much force the vehicle had almost bent in half.
Jungkook forced his feet to move further and he reached out to pull on the blood covered door handle keeping him from Mrs. Kim. The door wouldn't budge. "Shit."
"Jungkook...." The woman stuck in the car huffed in pain. "My foot's crushed. I might be able to slip out if I get lucky, but I can't run away. You need to leave me and get them out of here."
"That's not an option. You're coming with us even if I have to carry you all on my back at once. Let's get you out of here." He ran back around to the other side and climbed into the backseat.
"Stop this. Whatever hit us...threw that at us...it's strong. Whether it's a machine or something living, we won't stand a chance if it finds us. Get out before it does." She looked back, begging the alpha to just run.
"That's the plan." Jungkook wrapped his arms around the woman's torso and pulled her back, trying to dislodge her legs. He winced at her screams, but kept pulling when he noticed it was working.
Metal sliced her skin all the way down her shins until she was set free. Jungkook carried her out to the others who were still struggling to get themselves together after the impact. "We need to get as far away from here as we can. Can you guys walk?"
Taehyung looked up with worn out eyes and nodded. "I think so. Is...is mom okay?"
"She will be once we get out of here." Jungkook set Mrs. Kim down and pulled his coat off, taking off his shirt and tearing it into two separate pieces. He wrapped the ruined cloth around her legs and secure them the best he could, apologizing every time she cried out. "This is the best I can manage right now. We'll get you help when we find somewhere safe."
Jungkook put his coat on again and stood back up to shift. "Can you help get her on my back?"
Taehyung nodded and stood with shaky legs. He did his best to help his mother up, but his father ended up walking over and picking her up to place her on Jungkook's wolf form.
"Okay, let's go. Sir, can you carry Taehyung since he can't shift?" Jungkook's eyes settled on Mr. Kim as light enveloped him and his figure changed.
Taehyung climbed onto his father's back and as soon as he was secure, they took off running. They shot past the border, running as quickly as they could while still trying to be gentle to those riding along. The alphas' legs began cramping about a mile in, but they kept on sprinting through the grass until they couldn't anymore.
Mr. Kim nearly collapsed when they finally stopped. "I can't go any further. My shoulder can't handle any more."
Jungkook helped Taehyung to his feet with his snout. "We'll take a break and then continue."
"No." Mrs. Kim slid her body off of Jungkook's, cringing and biting her tongue to hold back a scream from the pain of her landing. "You take Taehyung and keep going. We'll catch up once my husband gets some rest."
"Mom, no. I'm not going to leave you guys here! What if someone finds you? You can't fight like this." Taehyung knelt next to his mom. "I can't leave you so vulnerable."
"Your mother is right. You two need to keep going. We'll be okay."
Tears streamed down Taehyung's face as he shook his head. "But...I can't..." He embraced his mother tightly, not willing to go. "Please..."
"It's going to be okay. We will be okay. Go and get out of here. We'll find you later. Just get to safety for now." Mrs. Kim pushed Taehyung back and looked him in the eyes. She paused for a few long seconds, making sure to take in the image of her son in case she couldn't see it again. "Go now. Quickly."
Jungkook walked a bit closer and leaned down to make it easier for Taehyung to climb on. He didn't say anything. There were no words that could make this easier.
Taehyung reluctantly climbed onto his mate's back, tears still staining his face. He looked back at his parents and sobbed, "I love you. Both of you."
They smiled and nodded. "We love you too, honey."
"Stay safe." Taehyung's father's voice echoed in his head, only making him cry harder. He instantly regretted every bad choice he'd made — every word he said that hurt them. He'd been such a bad son before they left and now he wouldn't have the time to apologize for it all.
Jungkook turned and set off to find the next town before leaving became even harder.
