So when a wolf gets marked, his or her partner is supposed to lick over the bite right after, sealing the bond. If this doesn't happen the initial pleasure it causes turns into severe pain until the mark is completed. The pain level will increase gradually as the time without completion gets longer. If it goes too long it can cause permanent damage like nerve damage and other physical conditions; however, it mainly causes psychological issues.
Marks can be renewed by a wolf by simply biting into the same spot. It still needs to be licked over, however, it won't cause as much pain as the first time if this doesn't happen. Sometimes the dominant wolf will use an unsealed renewed mark as a form of punishment for severe misbehavior, but they won't let it go on too long.
Remarking is also often used as a pleasurable stimulus since that is usually the first sensation it causes.
After a wolf gets their first heat, it tends to be a bit irregular at first. It won't occur exactly every month and the duration of each heat will vary for about half a year before it evens out and follows a regular schedule.
