When you lose your mind over matter

I clock in at 5:30 in the afternoon, Zoom up and open
On my laptop with its little, green lens staring me down
As if I've committed a crime punishable by death.
The meeting room loads. By then, I realize that
It's not just my camera that has trapped me
In its pestering gaze. For in this meeting room
(God forbid that I'm in the right one),
Are at least 10 more.

At least 10 more boxes fill up my own. At least
10 more faces— moving, expressive, alive— that
I must push past, to protect my solitude before
They trespass, à la Poltergeist, through my screen.
(Would they feel as flustered if they could walk
Through me, too?) And at least 20 more eyes
That bathe in their stories, cartoonish glimmer and all
As they roll in their pride, learned and all-knowing,
Only stopping to congratulate me simply because
I made it on time. Because they know that there is
All I'll ever be in their visionary world.

Never present, never absent, just there.
