Roman sighed as he stared at the rapids of the river. The water was so memorizing, even though he couldn't get his wings wet. He can't fly if they're wet, and if he can't fly then how will he be able to help get the food they were collecting back to their colony. Though, to be fair it was a fairly small colony, and each berry from the raspberry bush is enough for one meal for each family.
The river was wide, and the river bank was covered in rocks and pebbles on their side. While the water was beautiful, Roman was more interested in what was on the other side of the river. Anything could be there! Anything at all! It would be such a great adventure!
Unfortunately, no one is allowed over there. Even if it would be so easy to just fly over. But, one too many fairies had gone missing whenever one would go to the other side. Though, that was decades ago, but it's not like anyone has gone over to see if whatever threat was over there has left.
"Hey prince daydream!" his brother Remus shouted. "Stop staring across the river and help us out!"
Roman loved his twin... except he hated Remus. They both almost looked exactly the same, though their differences were obvious. The biggest difference was their wings, Romans were a golden color with red swirls that followed the veins. Remus was a greenish yellow, with darker green swirls following the veins. He got his wings from his mother, while Roman got his from his father.
The other differences were much smaller; the mustache Remus had grown out, Roman's hair was shorter while his twin had his in a small ponytail, Remus had white stripes in his hair. Roman's eyes were a golden red, while Remus's were a bright green. They both had strong jawlines, and their skin was dark.
"I wasn't daydreaming!" Roman protested, flying back over and grabbing the other side of the basket. It was big enough to hold maybe twelve berries, which didn't sound like much but fairies were only the average height of 5 inches so the basket was still too big to be carried by one fairy.
"All you ever do is daydream," Remus told him. He called over to Patton, "Babe! Ro and I are going to take this basket back to the colony!"
"Okay, I'll meet you there when we're done!" Patton called back.
Roman smiled and waved goodbye at the other fairy, who was working with another fairy named Jasmine. Patton had sun tanned skin since he works outside so much, though his freckles were still visible. It was fall so soon in winter his skin will get a shade lighter. His hair was full of chocolate curls, and his eyes were a bright electric blue like his wings.
Jasmine had her hair in tight black braids. Her skin was darker than the twins, and her eyes were a bright green. Her wings were a darker shade of green than Remus's, though she didn't have any swirls. Patton pretty much adopted her, and she mirrors his sweet and caring personality.
Roman and Remus picked up the basket and started flying back to the colony. If he hadn't been doing this for a few years now, then he wouldn't have the strength to do this with just Remus.
In any other species, or maybe even in different colonies, the prince's doing manual labor like this would seem odd. However, as stated before, their colony is so small that Roman knows everyone. There's still quite a bit of fairies, but Roman goes around town enough to familiarize himself with them. Plus, everyone pitches in to help with food, especially so close to winter.
The twins flew up high into the trees and stayed out of sight of any predators. Roman was just happy that he was allowed to go to the raspberry bushes near the river, even if it is a long flight home. His mother knows just how much he wants something new, a new adventure! So she's always hesitant when allowing him to go to the river, since she can tell that he wants to go across the river.
