Roman groaned in pain, feeling sore. He felt a hand running through his hair and he hummed as he nuzzled further into someone's shoulder.
"Roman?" Virgil asked, his hand freezing.
The prince blinked his eyes open and looked up at Virgil. Memories of what happened the night before flashed through his mind and he quickly pulled away from the borrower.
"Sorry," Roman told him.
Virgil shivered. "It's fine, you were cold."
Roman found the purple cloak around his shoulders and he took it off, giving it to Virgil.
"How are you feeling?"
"Horrible," Virgil answered, hugging his cloak close for warmth. "I'm sore from training, and it didn't really help that we slept here."
The fairy stood up and stretched. "I know what you mean. And unfortunately, the weather is getting colder."
"I'm surprised it didn't snow last night."
"Looks like the rain stopped, so we have that going for us."
Virgil stood up and rubbed his back, stretching it till it popped. "Yeah, I guess we shouldn't waste any time and-"
Roman froze when Virgil's ears twitched, the borrower's eyes widening in fear. He pulled Roman back from the hole and put a hand up to keep him there.
The prince watched as his friend crouched and slowly made his way to the hole, his ears up to listen better.
Roman gasped when there was a growl, and Virgil jumped back just as a paw appeared in the hole and swiped to grab him.
"Bobcat," Roman said, grabbing Virgil and holding him tight.
Virgil cursed and looked above for another way out. Unfortunately, he didn't see any openings.
The bobcat pulled it's paw back in and they could see it pacing around, waiting for them to run out. Virgil really wished he had his needle.
"How are we going to get out?" Roman asked, worry creeping into his voice.
"Uh..." Virgil tried to look around for anything to help. He slumped in defeat and tried to think of a more reckless plan, since he had nothing else. "We run out and split up, it can only chase one of us."
"Are you crazy?!"
"Probably, but I can't think of anything else. When you get out, fly high, bobcats are great jumpers."
"What about you? What if it chases after you?"
"I'll run through the bushes to slow it down, and if it doesn't give up then I'll climb a tree. I'm great at climbing."
"So are bobcats."
"Look, Roman, I can't think of anything else. You're just going to have to trust me."
Roman took a deep breath. "Promise me you'll be okay?"
Virgil softened, giving the prince a smile. "Okay, I promise."
"Then I trust you." Virgil started to walk to the door, his legs feeling like jelly, but Roman grabbed him by the arm and pulled him into a hug. "Be careful."
Virgil couldn't stop himself from nuzzling into Roman's neck. "I already promised I would be."
They both separated and took deep breaths to calm their nerves. They tensed when the bobcat growled again, getting impatient.
Virgil swallowed hard before sprinting out of the hole, quickly followed by Roman. The prince flew high in the trees before looking down, almost whimpering in fear when he saw the bobcat give chase after the borrower.
