"Excuse him," Patton told the stranger after Roman left. "He's got a short temper."
"I... I'm sorry," the stranger whispered.
"Oh you're okay! My name is Patton Lovegood!" The fairy held out his hand to Virgil, letting him shake it. "What's your name?"
"...Virgil," he hesitantly told him.
"Ooh, what an interesting name. I love it!"
"Thanks." Virgil looked away awkwardly, his heart racing in his chest.
"And your clothes are so interesting, what plants are they made from?"
"Oh, w-well I don't know. I got all of the material from humans, the giants."
"You've seen them!" Patton's wings started fluttering in excitement, lifting him off of the ground for a moment.
"I- yeah... they-they're real."
"Logan's going to love this!"
"I'm going to love what?" Logan asked, opening the door just in time to hear Patton mention him.
"Oh, dear! He's seen the giants before!" Patton loved the way Logan's eyes seemed to have light up and he smiled slightly, the stoic fairy was excited.
"Fascinating, I have so many questions. First, what is your name and the name of your species?"
"Uh... I'm Virgil and I'm a borrower,"
"Like the term borrow?"
"Y-yeah, we uh... we take things from the humans, or the giants as you call them. Only the things they don't use though! Things they throw out."
"You're far from home, aren't you?" Patton asked. "Do you remember what happened?"
"I fell into the river, guess it washed me up here?"
"Yes, the prince found you on the river bank."
"That was a prince!"
"Yup, he's Prince Roman. He has a twin named Remus too!"
"So, the material your clothing is made out of is from the giants?" Logan asked. "Did you live nearby?"
"I-I don't think so. Not one of their colonies at least, just a road."
"Road? Can you elaborate?"
"It's hard to explain, but they travel in these giant metal vehicles. Sometimes they drive on the grass and dirt, I've seen it before when climbing trees near the road. The road is a thin, stretched out rock I think? Or maybe a million rocks melted together on the ground? It's near a metal fence they have. Sometimes the giants step out of the vehicles and walk around, and they tend to leave things behind. Sometimes they throw things out of their vehicles while traveling."
"Fascinating. And, about your species, do you climb trees often?"
"I guess, to get away from danger mostly. Though, we live in any hole we can find. We mostly dig our homes in the ground."
"That will explain the claws, though the tail confuses me. It's like a mouse or rat tail."
Virgil frowned, his tail wrapping around him slightly as his ears drooped. "I'm not a rat. Don't call me that."
"Oh, forgive me, I wasn't aware of how insensitive it was."
"It's fine, it's just an insult from where I'm from."
"Oh, that's not nice!" Patton whined slightly.
"Insults are common in every community or colony," Logan explained. "For instance, being called a common moth here is insulting."
"Oh but there's so many beautiful moths out there! Like that pink and yellow moth, so wonderful!"
Logan turned back to Virgil. "What sorts of foods do you eat?"
The thought of food made Virgil's stomach hurt. "Usually berries, that's our main food anyway."
"Oh, we should get you something to eat then!" Patton exclaimed. "Do you know if you have any allergies?"
"No, I don't believe so."
"Great! I'll get someone to get you food."
"Really? B-but I don't have anything to give in return."
"Oh nonsense, you're a guest here! Hold on." Patton left the room for a moment.
"So in your colony, you have to trade things for food?" Logan asked.
"Usually, yeah."
"Strange, what if you have nothing to trade?"
"Then you starve."
Logan frowned slightly and hummed in disappointment. "Surely you all feed each other, protect one another in your colony. Is there a food shortage?"
"No, we have lots of food. The borrowers in my colony are selfish."
"That's unfortunate." Logan paused for a moment, glancing at Virgil. The borrower shrunk under his gaze. "Where'd you get all of those scars from?"
"Okay, food will be coming soon," Patton said as he entered the room again, interrupting the conversation.
"Thank you," Virgil told him. "I appreciate it."
"We should give you some time to rest before asking more questions. I'm sure you're tired, and you have your own questions."
