"Everything hurts," Virgil complained, amusing Roman.

Of course, of freaking course Janus is his trainer. Why not? The fairy loves to mess with everyone and gave Virgil a long and hard workout. Virgil was currently laying a tree branch, his face still red from the workout.

"As hilarious as this is, it's not too late to quit," Roman reminded him. "I'll just tell my mother that you aren't cut out for it and-"

"No."

"Why again did you agree to become my guard?"

"Your mother said you hated having a guard with you and I love annoying you."

"You're the worst."

"You make me blush."

"What's the real reason you're doing this?"

Virgil was quiet for a moment before sitting up with a sigh, ears drooping low. "I want to prove to your father that I'm not a threat so he won't want to execute me anymore."

"He doesn't want to execute you still!"

"I heard him talking to your mother."

"Okay, one that's eavesdropping. And two, did he actually say the words 'I want him dead?'"

"He didn't have to. He... he thinks I'm a troublesome rat. I want to prove that I'm not." And to prove that he isn't worthless.

"Rat seems a bit rude, you're more of a mouse."

Virgil smiled for a bit before it dropped. "I hate being called a rat. It's a major insult where I'm from."

"Oh, I didn't realize. Is mouse?"

"No, it's actually a pet name." Virgil smiled at the way Roman's face turned red.

"I-" the prince cleared his throat when his voice cracked. "I didn't realize."

The borrower laughed at his embarrassment and stood up. "Come on, I was told what you have to do today. Don't you have to go around town to make sure everyone has enough food for the week."

"Oh, right!" Roman jumped up to his feet. "You still look a bit winded, so would you like me to carry you?"

Virgil shook his head. "No, I'm fine. What kind of guard would I be if you had to carry me everywhere? Besides, I should stretch up my muscles so they don't ache so bad later."

"I'll be sure to ask a servant to run you a hot bath later tonight."

"Aw, you do care about me."

Roman rolled his eyes with a small laugh. "Whatever, just come along."

Virgil followed Roman down the tree, hopping from one branch to another before climbing the bark and onto the ground. Roman landed next to him and started walking to the homes that were on the forest floor first, deciding to work their way up.

Virgil had to admit, he was a bit jealous. No one in his colony would ever think about checking on the residences, especially not the people in charge. There was no royal family, but by default there were some obvious leaders. It made the borrower wish there was someone like Roman in charge of the colony so the less fortunate would get some help.

Roman knocked on the first door and waited a moment. It opened up, and behind the door a man smiled at the prince.

"Your highness!" he greeted.

"Prince Roman!" three little girls ran past their father and into Roman's arms.

"Hey you three!" Roman exclaimed, spinning them around once before setting them on the ground. "Alex, Anna, Abby, how are you guys doing?"
