In the end, Bella had to leave.

After Jackson had invited her to scrub in on his rhinoplasty, she willingly nodded and followed his lead with excitement. To be completely truthful, Bella never shared an interest in going into Plastics. In one way or another, she always came back to Neuro. By the time she finished her Foundation Training she already knew she would become a neurosurgeon, so she made sure she soaked up as much knowledge as she could which essentially led her to not really paying attention to any other specialty.

Standing beside her best friend, arguably one of the best plastic surgeons in the field, she felt she was learning what she managed to miss out on. Jackson took great pleasure in making her work—he asked her questions, and he even let her try out some things. All in all, the two of them had fun. Professional, but still fun.

And then, it happened.

"Dr Ledford, it's yours," the nurse spoke up once the sound of one of their phones chimed. "Dr Herman. 911."

"Shit," she muttered beneath her mask, her eyes immediately finding Jackson's.

"Go," he said right away, urgently, just as the page indicated. "I'm only going to be another hour, maybe less."

"Okay," she nodded, already untying her coverup, stepping over to the door.

Once she peeled everything off, she made her way from the OR to the room Herman paged from. Running through the halls, she almost bumped into Yang, who seemed to have gotten the worst news of her life, perhaps just returned from a funeral. Close behind her was Grey, who shot a disapproving look at Ledford.

"Tell Avery we want an explanation!" Grey shouted and it made Bella do a twirl in the middle of running. She put her hands in the air, pulling a confused face, then turned back to face forward and ran for the stairs.

Avery needs to give an explanation? An explanation for what? Especially to Grey. It didn't make sense, and Bella didn't have time to find an answer for it as she just made it to the right floor, and the right room.

Out of breath, she panted but pulled herself together and swallowed. Bella opened the door to the MRI scanner and looked to the woman in there.

"Nicole. What's going on? What happened?"

"I need you to scan me," she said, already sitting down. "Something's happening. I'm—I'm experiencing... symptoms."

"Okay," she nodded, showing that she was listening carefully. "What exactly?"

"Fuzziness around the edges, a little like... uh, a little like blinders, and it's, uh, dark... darker than it should be, I think," the softness of her voice revealed the true fear that set in for Nicole. Even just by looking into her eyes, Bella could tell she felt terrified for the first time since they started working together.
