[BELLA LEDFORD]
Seattle, Washington˚*•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙*˚
For a surgeon, it took an incredibly long time for Marcus to sink in that his nephew would be more than fine. Not only because the little lad landed under the best set of hands, but also because the tumour was one-hundred percent benign. Perhaps Alex's presence upped his nerves which in result set his sister and his sister's husband on a terrified ramble period but Bella handled the situation swiftly and efficiently.
"I don't make promises to patients but hear me when I say I'll bring your son—your nephew—back to you healthy as a horse," she echoed with a smile, clutching the tablet to her chest.
"Why don't you have a resident with you?" Marcus had asked, which, again, ended in his family's gasp because they automatically assumed that meant the situation was bad. If Bella didn't let kids learn during the surgery—which some patients were for—then it must be a horrible one.
"They're all currently with another member of staff for a different project," Bella answered before Alex could've said something. Not due to lack of faith in her best friend, but rather for her sake. Too many questions from the family were possible, no matter what physicians say. And they can get tiring. "Dr Karev is with me as he is Head of Paediatric Surgery and I simply need him present for procedure purposes. There is absolutely nothing to be afraid of as Mathias is in the safest sets of hands he possibly could be."
The parents nodded and their attention shifted to Mathias.
"We just don't want to lose him—anymore of him," the mother, Caleb's sister, spoke. Her voice wobbled as her eyes welled with tears, making them appear like glass against the coloured globes.
"Dr Ledford is our very best neurosurgeon," Alex spoke and Bella kept herself from smiling or nodding. The praise felt good. "And I'm not just saying that because I work with her. I mean it when I say she is fantastic and your son will be receiving the very best care here. Once he is out of surgery, we will move him over to our Peds wing where he'll be primarily under my care with initial check-ups from Dr Ledford."
It took some time to install the right amount of trust into the parents. Some take longer than others but honestly, Bella would've thought with having a surgeon in the family, it'd be easier. Perhaps their relationship wasn't how she imagined it but that would've surprised her, given how hands on Caleb appeared.
They left them in the room as the nurses came to prepare Mathias, and Alex and Bella walked over to the OR floor. Silence embraced them even though they waltzed through the busy hall. The lift engulfed them finally where Bella sighed and leaned her head against the back of the metal box. Eyes fluttering shut for a moment.
"I can't fucking believe I'm asking you this but how do you and April move past arguments?"
Alex laughed because he obviously couldn't believe it, either.
