Koda never found comfort in other individuals. Despite living in a diverse world of quirked people... kids were still cruel.
He was bullied for many things, why didnt he have any hair?? Why does he stutter?? Why is he bigger than the rest of the kids??
Koda was grateful for his quirk, it allowed him to spend less time with humans, and more time with other animals making his loneliness feel less heavy.
He also idolized lots of heros with animal characteristics. He sympathized with them, knowing their appearance played apart in their lower ranking. Yet despite that they still work and live passionately, something he aspired to do the same.
Koda had never dared approach a pro hero before-not up close, anyway. But Gang Orca was different. Not just because of the dorsal fin, the pitch-black skin, or the sharp crimson eyes. Koda saw something else.
He saw someone like him.
After the other students cleared out, Koda stayed behind, clutching a small plush bunny in his hoodie pocket. It was frayed at the ears, the stitching near its neck coming loose, but it helped. He wasn't supposed to have it in uniform, but today had been hard. The yelling during training, the explosions, the stares from classmates... too much.
He'd slipped into littlespace without meaning to. Everything felt louder, sharper. His shoes felt too big. The hallway too long.
His voice came out small, barely more than a whisper:
"Um... M-Mister Gang O-Orca, s-sir?"The towering hero turned slowly, his presence immense and shadowy. Koda shrank instantly, eyes going wide, gripping the bunny tighter through his pocket. His knees bent, posture curling in. He didn't even mean to-it just happened.
Gang Orca stared at him, unreadable. But something in his stance shifted. He tilted his head, slightly. Observing.
Koda's lip trembled. "I-I like y-you... I mean, um, you're a h-hero even th-though you look... different. Like me."
Another long pause.
Koda dared a peek upward-and what he saw wasn't anger. It was... confusion. And something softer underneath.
Gang Orca crouched a little, still towering, but closer to Koda's level.
"You having a small day, kid?"
Koda blinked, surprised. How did he know?
"I... mmhm." His voice squeaked, and he reached up to rub one eye. "I didn't mean to go little... it just happened..."
Gang Orca didn't smile-he couldn't-but his voice lost its edge.
"That's alright," he said. "Some days feel too big. I get that."
Koda sniffled, holding out the plushie, unsure why. "Th-this is Bun. He's quiet too."
Gang Orca didn't mock him. Didn't laugh. He nodded solemnly. "A reliable partner. I like him."
Something inside Koda uncurled.
"Come walk with me," Gang Orca said, motioning with his fin. "You don't have to talk. Just bring Bun."
So they walked, slow and quiet. Gang Orca didn't press questions. Just pointed out birds, dogs, little things in nature that made Koda's eyes widen like a curious toddler's. He even slowed his steps when Koda's shoelace came undone and knelt-without a word-to help tie it.
It wasn't traditional mentorship. But for Koda, it was everything.
Sometimes, heroes don't save you from villains. They save you from the heaviness of the world-just by letting you be small in their presence, without shame.
