Chapter 26: The Survivors

“Des, Lock everything down…I’ll handle stuff here.” My heart stopped in my chest. I could hear the worry and fear in my father’s voice, that’s never something I heard a lot. Then the phone call was disconnected. I stood in the middle of the small class room looking at my phone dumbfounded. “Des, what happened?” Alex asked panicked. “We need to go into lock down.” I said still numb. “Like the school or the pack?” “Both, Everything needs to go to lock down.” My numbness ware off and fear took its place. “Everything, needs to put in lock down know! Alex call all the towns and send out the preprogrammed message about emergence to all pack members. I need to go find Grandpa!” I yelled as I ran out of the class room and down the flight of stair.

“Stop running through the halls!” A teacher came out of the class room to yell at me. I ignored him and continued to run directly to the office. Miss. Redwood was sitting at the desk when I barged into the main office. “You can’t go back there he’s…” She was cut off by me slamming open Grandpa’s door. He was sitting at his desk talking to two freshmen that looked like got into a fight. Before he could say a word I started. “I know. I’m sorry, but this is more important.” “What?!” He snapped hatred evident in his eyes. The boys shrank back by his voice but I was not fazed. “Everything must go into lock down.” The severity of the situation hit him and he looked at me less mad. “What’s going on?” “I just got off the phone with, dad. They are being attacked. Alex is calling people. The whole pack is being put in lock down, including the school.” “What kind of lock down? Like can classes continue?” “Yes, everything can continue. The windows need to be covered and doors need to be lock. No one can come in or out. All class room doors should be shut and locked too.”

Grandpa nodded and then looked at me concerned. “What about Justine and Leba?” “Leba’s with Sean at home. I trust him to take care of her, and I’m going to take care of Justine right now. Just make the announcement and please call the other schools.” I nodded my head at him and walked swiftly out of the office.” Grandpa made the announcement as I walked down the hall. Teachers were out in the halls closing and locking door as I walked by. Some gave me a nod of the head and others looked at me concerned. I didn’t respond to either. I needed to get to Justine as soon as I possibly could.

Her Math teacher Mrs. Brookfield was closing the door right as I got there. I stuck my foot in the jam forcing her to look at me. “Mrs. Brookfield I need Justine.” I said my voice calm.  “Calm in.” She gestured into her class room. As I walked into the class room, all the students looked up staring at me, besides Justine. She was looking down trying to hide her phone under her desk. “Mrs. Justine is that a cell phone I see.” I said walking towards her. Her head shot up at the sound of my voice and then she slid her phone into her pocket.

“Desy!” She yelled jumping out of her chair and into my arms. “Hey, baby, we need to get you upstairs.” I said while holding her close. “What happened?” “I’ll explain when you are safe.” She nodded her head and squeezed out of my arms turning to get her bag and stuff.

“Mrs. Brookfield, Justine’s needs to do her work upstairs with me the rest of the day.” I said giving her a smile. She shook her head at me. “Here, Justine. Here’s you the rest of your class work and homework.” She said handing Justine three papers. “Ok, thank you.” She said sliding them into her backpack. Before she could put it back on I grabbed it and throw it over my shoulder. “Come on.” Grabbing her hand, I lead her up stairs to the class room.

Walking in Alex was sitting at what suppose to be the teacher’s desk, on the phone. Jessica was sitting at a student desk, probably doing school work. Albin was pacing back and forth on the phone. “When was the last time you heard from dad?” Albin bombarded me as soon as I walked into the room. “When, I got off the phone with him less the five minutes ago. Don’t try to call him; he has more important things right know.” Albin’s eyes shot up at me with a glare. I knew that at any moment he was going to start freaking out. “Des what’s going on?” Justine asked once she was safe in the room. I closed and locked the door behind us.
