Johnny

I knock on the trailer door, my heart pounding with fear. Having arrived in Soribus yesterday, I called Del immediately after settling in my hotel, wanting to take her to dinner, only to have her ignore me. I didn't assume she was ignoring me last night of course. Only did I assume that when two o'clock today rolled around and I haven't yet been able to get ahold of her.

I glance at the driveway again, even though I already know her car is there. I hear someone shifting inside and the door unlocks, and it opens a crack, revealing cold blue eyes of Jack. He glares at me, recognizing me. Why isn't he at school?

"What do you want?" He snaps, but he whispers.

"I'm trying to get a hold of Del. Is she here?" I ask.

"Why don't you just leave us alone? Go back to where you came from," he says. He tries to slam the door closed but I slam my arm against it, stopping him.

"Where's Del?" I demand. My blood still seems to be on boiling point ever since breaking up with Kate.

"Leave us alone!" He half shouts. But I already know that he isn't really angry. He's afraid. I hear a muffled whisper behind the door and Jack whips his head inside. "Get away, Joey!" He whispers harshly. "Go to our room, quick!" The door opens then, Jack stepping back and a large man steps in front of me. He stands before me, sickly thin, wearing a dirty construction shirt.

"Who are you?" He demands. But I think he already knows. I'm not afraid of him though. And it's about time they all knew, if they don't already.

"I'm Del's oldest son," I say firmly. Jack frowns before looking up at his dad.

"What?" He asks. I look back at Anderson.

"So, Del didn't tell them?" I say. "Was that Del's choice, or yours?" I challenge. Anderson turns to Jack.

"Go to your room," he says.

"What does he mean he's Mom's oldest son?" Jack asks, which I can tell is a large act of defiance.

"Go to your room!" Anderson shouts, which seems to shake the windows. Jack continues to glare at him but walks away. He whips back to me. "And you," he points an accusing finger at me, "I don't ever want to see you near any of my family members again or I'll call the police."

I don't think. I just do it. Partly because I have a serious lack of patients right now and partly because I've wanted to ever since hearing what he did to Jenny and seeing the way he treats my brothers. I grab his finger, yanking it backwards and slam my fist as hard as I can in his face. It's enough to knock him onto the ground. But it isn't enough to knock him out flat. I step inside, standing before him.

"Try threatening me again and I can assure you that you won't ever see those two boys again. I've got enough dirt on you to get full custody on them. If I ever hear that you lay a finger on my mother you can be sure that'll we'll meet again," I say in a low voice. He glares up at me, holding his bloody nose. I walk through the dark messy hall and into a small kitchen where I see Jack standing in the hallway, staring at me wide eyed. I pause before him but I'm not sure what to say, so I move past him and down the narrow hallway that smells of dirty laundry. I open the back bedroom door that I assume is the master bedroom. It's a mess, but almost right when I enter Del exits from a side door that must be a bathroom. Her eyes widen with fear and shock when she sees me, and she wraps her arms around herself.

"Johnny!" She whispers urgently. She glances down the hall. "What are you doing?! If-"

"I took care of Anderson," I say. She gasps.

"What did you do?" She says, glaring at me. She pushes past me and rushes down the hall. A sharp pain cuts through my heart as I follow her. She gasps when she sees Anderson and immediately starts fusing over him. Both Jack and Joey stand in the hallway watching us. "Do you need water? I'll get you some ice?" Del says.

"Get off me," Anderson says, shrugging her off him. I turn and get a good look at my brothers, but I don't see a single bruise on them. I turn back to Del.

"What the hell is wrong with you?" I say to Del, nearly shouting. She turns to me, pale faced. "Is this what it was like with Jenny? Did she die because you turned your back to her for that piece of shit?! Just you did to me?" Her eyes immediately swim with tears. I bite my tongue, knowing that if I let myself start, I'll never stop. I push my glasses up my nose, take one last glance at Jack and Joey before storming out of the house.

Imount on my motorcycle before I hear a loud shout come from the house. I lookup to see both Jack and Joey standing near the door, staring at me longinglyand looking inside, at Anderson most likely. I reach in my leather jacket pocketand pull out my hotel card. I hold it up for them to see, not worried thatAnderson or Del will see me with the blankets covering the windows. I drop itonto the ground before starting Vincent and driving off.
