"Everyone reaches their breaking point."

"Who ordered this extra large cheese pizza?" Lucas asked, walking into his room holding a pizza.
"I think that was you," I laughed.
"I'm kidding. I know that I ordered this pizza just for me."
He picked up a slice of pizza and shoved it in his mouth.
"You're gross," I muttered.
"Says the girl that shoves down a whole order of takeout in less than ten minutes."
"Shut up! You're a guy that means you are just naturally gross."
"Cough, cough, cough stereotypes."
I hit Lucas on the back of his head.
"Why are you so sassy all the sudden?" I asked.
Lucas scoffed, "It's from spending so much time with you."
"Are you denying that you don't like spending time with me?"
He leaned over and kissed my cheek.
"I love spending time with you."
There were those words again.

Lucas had passed out over an hour ago, leaving me to just sit on the couch and watch TV.
The familiar ringtone starting going off across the room. If Lucas was awake I would have forced him to get up and grab the phone for me.
"Hello," I said quietly.
"Maya?" It was was Shawn.
"Hey. How are you?"
"That's actually what I wanted to talk to you about."
My heartbeat suddenly increased.
"Shawn what's wrong?" I begged.
"They...they've had to drain fluid out of my lungs."
I sucked back the tears that were sure to be coming out of my eyes in a couple of seconds.
I asked, "What about the experimental trial?"
The cancer had caused fluid in his lungs before, but I thought once he was on the trial it wouldn't happen again.
"That's exactly what is was. They told me there was no guarantee that the trail would fully work."
Lucas began to wake up on the couch.
"Maya?" Lucas called out.
"Shhh," I replied to Lucas.
He got up and walked over to me so he could listen to the conversation. Lucas could tell that small tears were running done my face so he wiped them away.
"So what now?" I asked.
"I think I'm just going to let nature take its course."
"Shawn you have to fight!" I cried into the phone.
He needed to fight like he had before. He needed to be there like he has been.
"I wish it was that easy."
"No! I'm not ready for you to go yet."
That was the thing I got out before I fell to my knees crying.
Lucas took my phone and said a few things to Shawn before he hung up and sat down next to me.
"It's not fair that he's the one who has to die," I cried into his shoulder.
Lucas ran his hands through my hair and whispered into my ear, "I'm sorry that this is happening."
Lucas I'm sure had no idea what to say to me. Nobody knows what to say.
Shawn was basically Riley's Uncle and even she was not going to miss him as much as I was.
He's been the closet thing I had to family in years.
