"Oh my goodness! Oh my goodness! They're fighting and I won't get no sleep! Oh my goodness!" Jolie projected from the stage, embodying the character of Tessie the orphan in their school production of Annie.
Evie elbowed a grinning Gia and whispered, "She's really good."
Gia nodded and watched Jolie with pride. She'd come a long way from the shy girl Gia met back in the fall.
"Where did you say Nick is?" Evie questioned during intermission.
"He had a meeting with some executives at work." He and his lawyers were updating the execs on what was happening with the case. The FBI had originally worked with the top executives at Morgan Stanley to find information on Nick, Ben Nakamura, and more recently Chelsea, but those were things she couldn't say to Evie.
Evie's eyebrows shot up. "Ooh! Sounds like maybe they're recognizing your boyfriend's accomplishments."
"Something like that." Gia smiled tightly. It had been hard keeping this from Evie. She was like a sister and they normally shared everything, but with this, she and Nick were legally bound to keep quiet until it officially went public and even then what they could say was limited.
"Are you looking forward to your trip home for Easter?" The lights were up for intermission, so Gia and Evie stood to stretch their legs.
"I am. I wish you were coming too."
Gia shrugged. "You have more of a reason to go home than I do, since Matt's there. I'm looking forward to the extra time with Nick." Gia couldn't imagine leaving him, and he wasn't allowed to leave the city according to the conditions of the bail agreement. If there was even a chance he might end up in jail soon, she would forever regret not spending time with him.
"I get it, but you could bring him with you."
"He's not able to get away. Work stuff." It was true, it did relate to work.
Evie grinned slyly. "So you two seem to be getting really cozy lately. Whenever you're not working you're practically inseparable."
Gia smiled back but held her tongue. It was true, ever since their discussion the night they heard Chelsea was caught in the act and he almost broke up with her, he had been a changed man. All his doubts seemed to have vanished and he had been so attentive, romantic, and protective of their time together. If she didn't care for him like she did it would feel suffocating, but she couldn't get enough.
"And you," Evie went on, "You get that dreamy look every time someone mentions his name."
"Do I?" Gia chuckled. "I guess so."
"So, um, Matt asked me to apply for a teaching job in Charleston for next year. He has a connection to the superintendent of schools." Evie's whole face like up while she spoke.
"Oh Evie! That's so amazing! Next thing you know, he'll be popping the question!"
Evie's eyes watered. "Do you think it's too soon? He even said he and Evan have a friend, a girl, who has a room available for me in her apartment!"
"No, it's not too soon, you guys have known each other forever.. And we all know you've both been secretly waiting for each other by never getting into a serious relationship until now. I think it's perfect."
Evie rolled her eyes and smiled. "What about you and Nick? Has he mentioned wanting you to stay in New York after your internship?"
Gia shook her head. She knew she'd have to decide soon, but neither she nor Nick had brought it up. The FBI case looming over him seemed to put all future plans on hold. If something didn't happen soon she would have to blindly make a decision. The idea of staying in New York if Nick was imprisoned depressed her, so she avoided those thoughts.
