The car hummed with exhaustion and fragile victory.
Bonnie glanced at him in the rearview. "So how did you become powerful enough to siphon a siren's psychic leash?"
Kai smiled—not defensive, nostalgic. "Practice."
He leaned back, eyes drifting toward the window, voice quieter now. "I've been siphoning dark magic for over a year. Grimoires, tomb spells, forbidden coven leftovers. Anything old. Anything dangerous. Anything that bites." He shrugged. "I didn't want to wait for permission."
Nate scoffed. "That tracks."
Jennifer stared at him from the seat beside him, unreadable.
Kai noticed without looking. "You can talk now, by the way."
Jennifer exhaled. "Thanks for the update."
Caroline sighed from the front seat. "So we defeated a siren and upgraded Kai's magic level to final boss. Awesome."
Kai grinned. "I prefer morally ambiguous ally, but sure."
Jennifer looked at him again, pulse steady for the first time in days. "No, Caroline's right." A faint smile cracked through her exhaustion. "You're definitely final boss energy."
Kai smirked, looking back at her properly now. "Yeah." He paused. "But I helped save your world today." His voice dipped again, quieter. "That has to count for something."
Jennifer didn't answer.
But the silence this time wasn't hatred.
It was possibility.
Damon woke up screaming.
Not from pain—from silence.
The siren's voice was gone. The constant pressure, the whispering obedience, the hum inside his skull that hadn't stopped for weeks—gone. He sucked in air like he hadn't breathed properly in years, hands clawing at the couch cushions as his eyes snapped open.
"What—" His voice cracked. "What happened?"
"You're back," Elena said quickly, kneeling in front of him. "You're safe."
Damon blinked, disoriented. Then his gaze landed on Jennifer standing a few feet away, pale but upright.
His brow furrowed. "You."
She stiffened. "Me?"
He sat up fully now, scanning the room. The tension. The way everyone was positioned like they were bracing for impact. And then—
Kai.
Standing in the corner. Still. Watching.
Damon's jaw tightened. "Why is he here?"
Jennifer answered before anyone else could. "Because he helped."
Damon scoffed weakly. "Of course he did."
"No," Bonnie said, sharp. "He really did. He killed her. Broke the bond. You wouldn't be breathing right now without him."
Damon looked back at Kai, studying him more carefully this time.
Something was wrong.
Kai wasn't smirking. Wasn't mocking. Wasn't filling the space with noise. His eyes were too dark, too focused—locked on Jennifer like she was the only thing in the room emitting sound.
"Hey," Damon said cautiously. "You look like you're about three seconds away from eating the furniture."
Kai didn't blink.
