- "They don't look like very happy bunnies." -
James Bucky Barnes was standing in a market, buying some plums. He was currently staying in Romania to keep away from everyone, trying to make sure his past didn't effect his future as much as he though it could.
After paying for his plums, he walked away from the fruit stand about to cross the road. Over the road, he saw a man looking at him as if he was thinking, puzzled about him. Bucky glanced away as a lorry went past and looked back to see the man come to a realisation.
The man ran from his newspaper stand as Bucky crossed the street. Placing his plums down, he picked up a paper and saw that he had apparently bombed Vienna. Looking around, he placed the paper down and made his way back to his apartment.
In his apartment, Steve had just entered and was looking around the ratty place. It was small, only a bare mattress on the floor with an old sleeping bag and a pillow. There was a small kitchen as well and it seemed as though Bucky was living off protein bars.
Steve picked up a book from the top of the fridge, flickering through it. The book had multiple post-it notes attached to the edges. They were filled with the few things Bucky had remembered over the past year or so. On one page, Steve caught sight of Nova's full name as well as her old assassin name.
"Heads up, Cap. German Special Forces, approaching from the south." Sam spoke up through the coms.
"You might wanna be quick, Steven. They don't look like very happy bunnies." Nova stated, squatting on the roof she was currently on as she picked her slightly chipped nail polish.
"Understood." Steve replied.
Steve sensed someone behind him and turned to see Bucky standing there, glaring at him. Steve breathed out as the two held eye contact for a few seconds.
"Do you know me?" Steve questioned.
"You're Steve." Bucky answered after a moment of thought. "I read about you in a museum."
"They've set the perimeter." Sam said firmly.
"I know you're nervous, and you have plenty of reason to be. But you're lying." Steve stated.
"I wasn't in Vienna. I don't do that anymore." Bucky mumbled.
"They're entering the building. Hurry up, love." Nova chimed in.
"Well, the people who think you did are coming here now. And they're not planning on taking you alive." Steve explained.
