Alicia
Friday arrived, and I packed a few things in a backpack. I heard the familiar roar and waited until there was a double-tap on the door. I opened the door to Jax. "Can you explain why we have a secret knock?"
"I like to keep things interesting." Jax shrugged.
I raised my brow.
"Ready?"
"Yeah, let me grab my bag." I grabbed the backpack as Jax took it from me. I followed him out to his bike. He shoved my gear into his bike's compartment. It's a good thing that I didn't pack anything breakable.
Jax helped me onto the back of his bike, then climbed onto it. I wrapped my arms around his midsection as he started the cycle and pulled away. His bike roared along the highway as I held on tight to him.
Jax pulled off of the highway onto a dirt road. His wheels kicked up dust as he slowed down and pulled into a spot. Jax dropped his kickstand and helped me off his bike. Then he climbed off, opened the compartments, and removed items. He handed me my backpack and led me to an opening.
I set my backpack on the ground as Jax removed something from a bag and popped up a tent. He unrolled a sleeping bag, placed it inside of the tent, and inflated a pillow. I stared at him with mouth agape. "How did you pack all that in your bike?"
"I found the items at an outdoor store. When I need time alone, I camp."
"What about food?"
"I hunt animals or fish and cook the food over a fire."
I found a log and sat down on it. "You don't strike me as a camper."
"Why? Because I'm a biker. Most bikers will sleep wherever they find a spot."
"Well, when I met you, you slept on your boss's couch."
"Because I don't have a home and set my previous one on fire."
My eyes swelled.
"It eliminates bullshit." Jax stood up, stepped towards me, and sat down next to me. "What about you? You were living in a house, then moved."
"I had issues with an ex, and he found out where I lived."
"You give me the okay, and I'll take care of your ex, sweetness."
"As much as I appreciate your tenacity, I haven't heard from my ex."
"The offer still stands."
I moved my brows up and down. I didn't need a war with Brett.
Jax rose from his spot. "Let's find some wood."
I nodded and helped Jax gather wood for a fire. We carried it back, set it down, and Jax formed a circle with rocks. He placed the wood in the middle and set it up.
"Were you ever a Boy Scout?"
Jax glanced at me. "Do I look like the Boy Scout type?"
"You could have been a Boy Scout." I shrugged.
Jax chuckled and shook his head. "I set my house on fire, and you question whether I was a Boy Scout or not. That's cute." Jax stood up. "Do you have an issue with fish?"
"Am I allergic to fish?"
"Yeah."
"No." I shook my head slightly.
"Good because that's what we're having for dinner."
"What about drinks?"
"There's a freshwater stream a half-mile down a trail."
