Richard

I sat at the bar, drinking a beer, when the bar door opened, and Gunner entered. He strolled over to me and slid onto the barstool.

"What did you find out?" I asked while drinking my beer.

"Jax was with a woman at his makeshift campsite. I checked around and found a cabin about an hour south of it. A few of the club members mentioned a group of women came into your bar, and the woman was with them."

I glanced at Gunner as Arlo set a beer in front of Gunner. "That tells me, dick. Who the fuck is the woman?"

"Her name is Alicia, and she comes from a prominent family. Her old man owns Keaton Enterprises."

I drank my beer. "It doesn't make sense. Why would someone like that get involved with a biker?"

Arlo leaned on the bar top. "That chick has a sister who was hanging with two other women and talking to club members. You know how it goes, Richard. Rich bitches want to live dangerously and come to a biker bar."

"Those rich bitches fucked with things," I said.

Arlo and Gunner looked at me.

"Keep an eye on this woman."

"What do you want us to do with her?" Gunner asked me.

"Nothing. Jax claimed her. If you touch her, he won't hesitate to put a bullet in your head. I want to know who she's running from."

"How do you know she's running?" Arlo asked.

I looked at Arlo and Gunner as I lifted the bottle's lip to my lips. "No one runs for no reason."

I tried to teach Alicia how to fish and hunt, but it wasn't working. We got on my bike and headed to a local store to buy some food. We entered the store, and I grabbed a handbasket. I grabbed hot dogs, chips, pop, and beer. After checking out, we headed to the campsite.

I pulled up to the tent, dropped the kickstand, climbed off, then helped Alicia off my bike. I grabbed the shopping bags and beer from the compartments and set them down. After sitting down, I cracked open beers for us.

"I'm sorry that I'm terrible at fishing and hunting," Alicia said.

I lifted the bottle to my lips. "You suck at fishing and hunting."

"Jax!" Alicia gave me a playful smack on the arm.

"What? It's not my fault that you suck at your survival skills."

Alicia rolled her eyes and shook her head. "I can cook."

"But you can't catch living food."

Alicia gave me an annoyed look as I snickered. "Okay, so I can't hunt and fish. There's nothing wrong with that."

"Not if you want to starve."

Alicia rolled her eyes.

"I'll make you a deal. You cook what I capture. Then we won't starve."

We laughed. Then we got up, gathered wood, and I started a fire.

"Where did you learn how to camp?" Alicia asked me.

I stoked the fire. "My mom taught me. It was the only time she found peace from my bastard old man. She would bring me to this site and show me how to camp. She would say, Jaxson, if things get rough, you come here. Don't let anyone disturb your peace."

"Your mom sounded like a wise person."

"She was but stayed with a piece of shit."

The fire roared as the wood crackled. I grabbed two hot dogs, slid them on sticks, and handed one stick to Alicia. We roasted our food over an open fire.

I glanced at Jax as I roasted my hot dog over the fire.

"What?" Jax turned his stick.

"You protect the people you love, don't you?"

"I protect the ones who matter."

"What about the ones who don't?"

Jax gazed at me. "They're not my problem."

My brows lifted.

Jax moved to a place next to me and pushed my chin with his fingertip so that I was facing him. "You matter. Anything that you need, I'll do everything I can for you. No questions asked."

I couldn't help but smile.

"Your wiener is on fire."

"What?" I cocked my head.

"Your wiener," Jax pointed to my hot dog, "is on fire."

I turned my head as my eyes expanded. "Oh, my God!" I held up the hot dog engulfed in flames and swung it towards Jax. Jax fell backward off the log as I stood up and turned the stick around.

"Alicia!"

"Jax! Help me!" I kept waving the flamed hot dog.

The hot dog got flung into the tent and caught it on fire. Jax scrambled to his feet, kicked dirt and sand towards the tent, and created a cloud of dust. Then he stomped on the tent as I waved my hand in front of my face and coughed.

After Jax extinguished the inflamed tent, the dust settled, and he looked at me.

"That wasn't my plan." I pointed at the charred tent.

Jax arched his brow as I blew air past my lips.

Alicia turned out to be a firebug, having destroyed our shelter. I gathered everything, including the burnt tent, and put the items into my bike's compartments.

"I'm so sorry," Alicia said.

I shook my head.

"Jax?"

I turned to face Alicia as she gazed at me. "From now on, I'll cook when we camp. I don't need you to catch me on fire."

Confusion swept Alicia's face. I snickered, and Alicia's haze lifted.

"Oh, haha."

I climbed onto my bike and helped her onto the back. Then I started it and drove from the campsite. The motorcycle roared down the road as the wind whirled around us, and cars passed us on the freeway. Alicia had her arms snugged around my mid-drift.

I turned onto a dirt road, and my wheels kicked up dust as I drove towards the cabin. I pulled up to the cabin, dropped the kickstand, got off, and helped Alicia off the back. I grabbed the charred tent, took it to the back, and shoved it into the trash can. The back door opened as Alicia stood in the doorway. I moseyed towards her and pulled her to me, then crashed my lips into hers.

Alicia broke free. "We still need to eat."

"I have other things in mind that I could eat," I smirked.

Alicia gave me a look and shook her head, then pulled away from me. As she went into the kitchen, my phone rang.

I stepped outside, closed the door behind me, and answered the phone. "Yeah?"

Meet me. We have business to discuss.

"What business?"

She stands five foot six, about one-thirty pounds, and has brown hair.

I ended the call and entered the cabin.

Alicia was gathering food to cook. "I figure we could have breakfast or lunch. What do you think?"

"I need to take care of something."

Alicia looked at me.

"It shouldn't take long." I walked towards her, kissed her, then left.

Richard had better have a damn good reason for wanting to meet and discuss Alicia. If he thinks about laying a hand on her, I'll put him down like a dog.
