Jax

After arriving home, I made dinner while Elise played in the living room. It gave Abby and me a chance to talk.

"So, tell me about your asshole ex," I said.

"Did anyone ever tell you that you're blunt?"

"Why beat around the bush? It solves nothing."

Abby blew air past her lips. "Okay."

I fried chicken while the potatoes cooked.

"I met my ex-husband in college. We dated for two years, then got married. I thought he was my Prince Charming. He turned into a toad."

"Ribbit, ribbit."

"Jax! That's not funny!"

I chuckled.

"Anyway, during our marriage, I attended medical school to specialize in pediatrics. I loved kids and couldn't wait to have one of our own. We tried to have a baby, but I was infertile. I figured we would adopt or try other avenues. My ex figured another woman was much better."

I glanced at Abby.

"So, I packed my belongings, moved home temporarily, and filed for divorce. My ex fought me on the divorce until he finally signed the paperwork. Eventually, the pediatrics office offered me a position."

While the chicken cooked, I drained the potatoes and mashed them. Afterward, I warmed some gravy and removed the chicken from the frying pan onto a paper plate. "Your ex is a dick for putting you through hell."

"Sometimes, I wonder if I have terrible taste in men."

I arched my brow.

"Present company excluded." Abby shifted in her spot and played with her fingers.

She helped me bring the food to the table.

"Elise, dinner is ready," I said.

Elias shuffled to the table, and I hoisted her into her booster seat. We sat down as I fixed her plate, removing chicken from the bones for her.

"If you don't want to meet my parents, you don't have to," Abby mentioned.

"Why not?" I dished food onto my plates.

"I don't want to force you into something that makes you uncomfortable."

"It's not that."

Abby looked at me as she ate her meal.

"Elise's mom's family weren't squeaky clean. I had the unfortunate pleasure of dealing with them, except for her sister."

"Oh."

"There are some things you need to know about me before introducing me to your folks."

Abby's forehead wrinkled as her brows crumpled. I figured I would talk to Abby after Elise went to bed. A three-year-old doesn't need to hear about her old man's lifestyle.

After dinner, I played with Elise until Jax put her to bed. I sat on the couch and waited for him until he returned and joined me. "Okay, I'm all ears."

"I'm a biker."

I scrunched my nose and squinted my eyes.

"I belong to a motorcycle club, and I'm an enforcer and VP of the club."

I stared at Jax, trying to digest what he was saying.

"Abby, I'm not a saint. I've killed people. But I never cheated on Elise's mom, even when we were apart. She ran before she found out she was pregnant with Elise. When I found her, someone had killed her."
