An uncomfortable encounter

I swung by Richard's office to grab a suit for the funeral and get the lowdown on everything.

Richard leaned back in his office chair as I sat on the couch in his office. "I paid off the cops and the medical examiner. A local gang banger will take the rap for Maxwell and his old lady's deaths. The boys firebombed the gang banger's shack, creating a war between the street gangs and Blake's crew."

"And if it doesn't work, then what?"

Richard leaned forward on his desk. "We take out Blake's crew. Brett intercepted a shipment from Mason Jones, pissing off Mason."

"Gun running and money laundering from Mason Jones was your first mistake."

"Mason will soon move into another territory."

"How are you so sure?"

"There's chatter Mason has other issues between his family and another family."

I didn't ask Richard for the details. With Mason Jones moving into another territory, it freed Richard from his debt to him.

"Did you tell Alicia the truth?"

"No."

"What if she finds out?"

"She won't. Alicia understands I don't discuss club business."

Richard leaned back in his desk chair and rubbed his bottom lip with his finger. I rose from the couch, grabbed the suit, and strolled out of Richard's office.

Janie called me about the funeral arrangements. Jax picked up a suit for the funeral. I sat on the bed, trying to decipher my emotions. I traveled to California to distance myself from my parents. After breaking up with Brett, I returned home. My parents never asked about me, according to Janie.

The front door to the cabin opened. I stood up and crept to the doorway. Jax closed the door and walked toward me, carrying his suit.

"I figured you would be gone longer," I mentioned.

"I needed to talk to Richard and grab a suit." Jax patted the suit on the hanger. "You don't need to attend the funeral if you don't want to."

"I'm going for my sister."

Jax gazed at me. I turned, padded into the bedroom, and sat down. Jax hung his suit on the back of the door and sat down next to me.

"I know you don't understand why I need to attend the funeral." I glanced at Jax.

"I'm not close to many people, and I don't have any family, but I understand the concept of a funeral."

I nodded. Jax wrapped his arm around me as I lay my head against his chest.

Tomorrow would be a long day.

The next day, I got dressed and waited for Alicia. She emerged from the bedroom dressed in a black form-fitting skirt and strolled toward me. I slid my hand into hers and led her out of the cabin.

Alicia gave me directions to the cemetery. We emerged from the car, and I escorted Alicia to the gravesite. Alicia's sister hugged Alicia as Alicia hugged her back. Then Alicia introduced us.

"I'm sorry we had to meet under these circumstances." Her sister sniffled and wiped her nose.

I didn't respond but nodded. A guy in a business suit sauntered toward us. Alicia stiffened as the guy approached us. I slid my arm around her waist and held her close to me.
