Jax
Tension filled my body as I drove us to Abby's folks' house. I hadn't been there since I retrieved Alicia's body and Elise's.
I pulled into the driveway and parked. An older couple came out of the house as we got out of the car. They stopped when I pulled out Elise and set her in front of me.
"Mom, Dad, I want you to meet Jax and Elise," Abby said.
I kept Elise close to me as Abby's folks took tentative steps toward me.
"It's nice to meet you, Jax. I'm Martha, and this is Jimmy," Martha said.
Jimmy held out his hand. I took it and shook it.
"Why don't we get Elise something to drink?" Martha asked Abby.
"That would be great. Come on, Elise." Abby held out her hand to Elise.
Elise took it and followed Abby and Martha into the house.
"Alana was a sweet girl. I'm not sure what happened, but I hope she's doing well," Jimmy said.
"Alana passed away."
"Oh, my. I'm sorry to hear that. Martha and I worried about her and prayed she was okay."
I studied Jimmy. He was a slender man with gray hair. Then I noticed the tattoos peeking from his long sleeve shirt. "You ride?"
"Not anymore. Martha and I settled down in Fairbanks so the kids would have a normal childhood. Don't get me wrong. I miss the open road."
I gave Jimmy a slight nod.
"Although the people in Fairbanks gave us a sideways glance when we bought the house. They didn't want to live next door to a biker." Jimmy rolled his eyes.
I snickered.
"After people got to know us, they learned we didn't want no trouble and left us alone."
"Yeah."
"Alana didn't talk much about Elise's dad. All she said was he loved her."
I nodded.
"Well, we better get inside before Martha plies Elise with cookies."
I followed Jimmy into the house and found Abby and Elise in the kitchen with Martha. Elise sat at the table with a cookie and milk while swinging her legs.
I walked over and crouched next to Elise. "Hey, no more cookies until after we eat."
"Daddy, I like cookies."
"I don't want you to spoil your dinner."
"Why?"
"Because I said so."
Elise crossed her arms and mocked me. "Because I said so."
"Seriously?"
"Yes."
"Do you want to watch Cinderella later?"
"Daddy!"
"Be a good girl for Daddy."
"But Daddy!"
"No, Elise."
"Fine." Elise huffed.
I shook my head, stood up, and turned to the others. "Elise has an attitude."
"I don't have an attitude."
I shot Elise a look as she shrugged. Abby and her folks laughed.
*******
After a few hours of visiting, we sat down at the table and ate dinner.
