Alicia
After leaving the diner, I drove to the address Betsy gave me. I walked up to the screen door and knocked twice before an older man answered it.
"Yes?"
"Mr. Swagger?"
"Yes?"
"Betsy from the diner sent me. She said you have a place to rent."
"Oh, yeah. Come in." Mr. Swagger stepped aside and waved me inside.
I stepped inside and stood in his foyer as an older woman met us at the door.
"Jimmy?" The woman noticed me standing there. "Oh, hello."
I offered her a smile.
"Martha, Betsey sent this young woman to us."
The woman's face lit up. "Oh?"
"She wants to rent the little house behind us."
"Well, let's show her. Follow me." The woman waved to me to follow them.
I trailed them through their house until we came outside. The man led us to a small house and unlocked the door. I stepped inside and glanced around.
"It's not anything fancy, but it's cozy?" The man mentioned.
"I think it's great." I smiled.
The couple returned my smile.
"How much?" I asked.
"Five hundred a month, including utilities," the man told me.
My brows lifted at how low they were asking.
"If that's too much, we could work out something."
"Oh, no. The price is fine, but I feel like I should help offset any additional costs."
The man rubbed his chin. "We could always use help with minor tasks. We don't move around like we used to."
"I would love to help you."
The man's face lit up as he turned to his wife. "See, I told you Betsey would send us a good one."
"Yeah, you did." His wife sighed.
"By the way, do you have a clinic?" I asked.
"Well, we have a small doctor's office. Doc Hammond has been looking for a nurse since his moved away," the man said.
"That's perfect since I'm a nurse." I smiled.
"I'll call Doc tomorrow and send you over."
The couple left so I could settle in. After getting situated, I called Janie.
Alicia?
"Hey, Janie."
Where are you?
"I'm safe, but I can't tell you."
Jax is looking for you.
I furrowed my brows. "I know."
Please tell me where you are so I can tell him.
I took a deep breath to calm my nerves. "I can't. It's only a matter of time Blake would find me because if Jax and I can't risk it."
Oh, Alicia.
"I need you to give Jax a message for me. Do you have a pen and a piece of paper?"
Yeah, hang on.
I waited until Janie returned to the phone.
Okay. Go ahead.
