While I tossed clothes into a washer, Elise coughed. I crept out of the laundry room and checked on her. She coughed again. I didn't need her sick, so I packed her up and hauled her to the doctor.

I sat in the waiting room with Elise on my lap while women licked their lips and eyed me like I was their next meal. I looked at the ceiling, hoping the doctor called me next.

A woman opened a door. "Mr. Harper?"

I stood up, pulled the diaper bag strap onto my shoulder, and carried Elise past the woman.

"We don't get certain men like you in the office," the lady mentioned.

"What?" I asked.

The lady smirked at me. I rolled my eyes. I thought hoes were terrible. They had nothing on housewives.

The woman showed me to an exam room. I sat Elise at the table as the woman closed the door and left us alone. Elise looked around, then at me.

"Don't ever act like a hoe."

"Otay."

"Good girl." I kissed her forehead.

A few minutes later, someone entered the room. "Mr. Harper?"

I glanced at the person and noticed Abby.

Abby looked at me as her brows lifted. "Jax?"

"Abby?"

Abby walked towards us, closing a folder. "What are you doing here?"

"Elise has a cough. I didn't know you worked here."

"I'm a pediatrician."

"That would explain why you know about children."

Abby smiled. "So, you say Elise has a cough."

"Yeah."

"When did it start?"

"Today."

Abby put in her stethoscope and checked Elise out. "Her heartbeat and pulse are strong." She checked Elise's temperature and ears. "She doesn't have a fever or ear infection." After examining Elise, Abby looked at me. "Elise seems healthy."

"I swear Elise has a cough."

"Elise isn't coughing now." Abby shrugged.

Great. Elise is making me a liar.

"Cough."

We looked at Elise.

Elise opened her mouth, stuck out her tongue, and coughed. I cocked my head and squinted my eyes.

Abby smiled. "It seems you have a little faker on your hands."

I shook my head as Elise grinned.

"All kids tend to fake a cough, sending their parents to the doctors."

"I don't want Elise to get sick. I don't even know what I'm doing."

"What do you mean?"

"I didn't even know I had a kid until recently."

Abby gave me a reassuring smile. "It doesn't matter if you were there from birth or now. You're here now taking care of your child. Every first-time parent frets over the smallest thing with their child. It's normal."

"I don't feel normal."

"Why?"

"I didn't have a regular nine to five job."
