I had Elise in the kitchen as I gathered everything ready for dinner with Abby. I handed Elise a pot, and she put it on her head.

"What are you doing?"

"Hat, Daddy."

I removed the pot from Elise's head and filled it with water. "It's not a hat. I need to boil spaghetti."

"Why?"

"So, we can eat dinner."

"Why?"

"Because you can't have spaghetti without spaghetti pasta. Now, help Daddy make dinner." I handed Elise a pot. "Put that on the stove."

Elise bounced over to the stove and put the saucepot on the burner. She returned to me. I handed her the box of spaghetti and carried the pot of water to the stove.

After emptying a jar of spaghetti sauce into the saucepan and turning on the burner with the water, Elise handed me the box of spaghetti.

"Thanks."

"You welcome."

"That's you're welcome."

"Otay." Elise gave me a thumbs up.

I lifted Elise and sat her on the counter. "Don't touch anything."

"Why?"

"It's hot."

"Why?"

"Because good girls listen to their daddies. Are you a good girl?"

"Yes, Daddy."

"Then don't touch the stove."

"Otay." Elise watched as I cooked dinner. "Daddy?"

"Yeah, baby girl?"

"Where's mommy?"

I stopped stirring the sauce and looked at Elise. Elise looked at me with her big brown eyes. What do you tell a child who's too young to understand what happened to their mother?

"Mommy took a trip."

"Where?"

I rubbed my forehead with my fingers. "Mommy is visiting angels."

"Why?"

"Because the angels needed help."

"Otay."

I knitted my brows as Elise sang a song with different words. It was the first time she had asked about Alicia since I found her. I wasn't ready for her question.

As the spaghetti cooked, I lifted Elise from the countertop and set her on the floor. I didn't need her to get burned. She helped me while I got dinner ready for Abby.

After work, I hurried home and changed into jeans, a sweater, and flats. I brushed through my hair and dabbed a little lip gloss on my lips. I figure a casual look would work for dinner.

I entered Jax's address into my GPS on my phone and headed to his house. After arriving, I knocked on the front door.

"Me help, Daddy!" Elise said.

"You need to ask who it is first."

"Okay."

A smile curled on my lips.

"Who is it?"

"It's Abby."

"Who?"

"Abby."
