"Head home Olivia! I'll close up" , Nina offers from behind the counter.
Olivia and Nina run a small cupcake shop in Tallahassee, Florida. It's been a long rough, last couple of days with their two main bakers out sick. Olivia's worked almost forty hours in three days, and she's beyond tired. Nina doesn't do any of the baking, but she runs the business spectrum of things, which left Olivia to fill in both spots by herself.
"You sure?"
"Girl yes," She laughs.
"Now go before I call Jadyn to drag you out of here" Olivia rolls her eyes playfully.
"You betta be lucky I love you" Nina kisses her cheek.
"Daaaww I love you more, even if you drive me mad with your notion and need for perfection"
Nina is Olivia's sister-in law and former college roommate. Olivia's husband Jadyn is her brother, who she fell in love with when he had supported her through a very dark space in her life. Understandably, at first, she didn't love the idea of the two of them together, but she eventually came around after seeing how well they fit together.
"Alright bug, I'll see you in the morning" Olivia grabs her coat and heads to her car before she talks herself into staying to do more work. She calls her house, but her adolescent twin sons don't answer. She can imagine Jayden with headphones on, playing a mindless game, and Zayden stays objecting to move for anything. Daily headache with these two. She still found it hard to believe they were getting ready to start middle school in the next year. Seems like they were little babies yesterday. Phone machine beeps, and she prays one of them or her hubby hears it.
"Hey boys, I'm on my way home. I hope your homework is finished. You guys want to go out for dinner tonight? Mama's in the mood to go out. Love you! Oh! and Jadyn.... please call your mother, she's called ten times this week and I rather you handle that instead of me."
Olivia hangs up the line turning out of the lot and head to where she's certain chaos is in full effect. Her and her husband own a beautiful home ten minutes from her bakery. His parents moved to Nevada to escape cold winters, and there was no chance Olivia would move back to Texas after college. You'd have to drag her in handcuffs. So, her in-laws sold them the house after they married. After a lot of gutting and redecorating, it's everything she could've ever wanted. Remodel cost more than when they bought it, but nevertheless, it's where they wanted to live. Before parking, she checked herself out quickly. Her face was covered in several baking products, and thanks to a fresh bowl of flour that soared earlier today, her dark brown hair was sprinkled in white powder. Typical day for her.
"Yoooo?" She calls out as she enters her home. Papers are thrown around, shoes are left where they landed, and coats are dropped right where the boys walked in. She swears, getting anyone to clean up after themselves is like pulling teeth around here.
"Boys! Come clean this mess now!" She yells with no response. She walks toward the family room where, exactly as she assumed, they were playing a game with their headphones on. She lifts one side off each of their ears.
"Hey!"
"Ma!" They both grumble. "Were playing a game".
"I can see that. How bout you play clean the hallway? That sounds like an fun game" She smiles and kisses them each on the cheek, which grants her another protest.
