Later in the afternoon, Marilla sat in the dining room, peacefully knitting something with a small smile as she thought about Mrs. Barry's words earlier in the day. The sound of footsteps coming down the stairs fills her ears as Y/n and Anne head into the room happily.

"Afternoon, Marilla." Y/n greets. "We missed you."

"Did you see the premier? What did he look like?" Anne questions.

Marilla shrugs. "Well, he never got to be premier on account of his looks, but I was proud of being a Conservative. Rachel, being a Liberal, had no use for him. Come along. Let's get you both fed. I expect you two must be hungry."

"I'm starving!" The sisters exclaim in unison.

"Did Matthew recount the events of last night?" Anne asks as they follow her in the kitchen.

"He did. I must say it was fortunate that you both knew what to do. I wouldn't have had any idea myself. I never saw a case of croup." Marilla informs.

"You know what was extra wonderful about it all? We got to spend time with our darling Diana." Anne recalls as they take some food from Marilla.

"It's been an agony not speaking at school, an utter agony." Y/n adds.

"It's been a long month, indeed." Marilla agrees.

"I was so sorrowful to leave her this morning, knowing it will all go back to how it's been." Anne recalls, Y/n nodding in agreement.

"Take a few more bites." Marilla instructs as she watches them eat.

"Why?" Y/n questions.

"Because when I tell you two who just visited here, both of yours reaction, mainly Anne's, will lift you clear out of the region of such material matters as appetite. Mrs. Barry paid a call today..." The sisters stop eating, staring at her with wide eyes. "...and she hopes you'll both forgive her and be good friends with Diana again."

Marilla smiles brightly as she watches the sisters glance at each other with wide eyes before hopping off the table they sat on, placing their plates in Marilla's hands. Y/n rushes to the coat rack, grabbing her coat and hat.

"W-We'll wash them later! I-I can't tie myself down to anything so unromantic as dishes at this thrilling moment!" Anne exclaims.

Following after her sister, Anne runs to Y/n's side, both of them holding hands as they sprint out the door, Marilla having to remind the redhead for her coat, which she runs back and grabs it before they run out again.

Running through the forest, baskets in hand for school, the sisters held each others hands as they, eventually, ran into Diana who was also running, calling their names. Meeting halfway, the three girls share a big hug together.

"Oh, aren't you almost nearly perfectly happy?" Anne asks, linking her arms with her sister and best friend. "Our separation has been an excruciating torment, but Y/n and I are so relieved it's finally over."

"Mother could hardly keep the three of us apart since you two saved Minnie May. Even Aunt Josephine said she'd be glad see you two again, and she doesn't like anyone." Diana explains.

"Wasn't she only staying while your parents were away?" Y/n questions.

Diana shakes her head. "No, no. She's come to stay with us for at least a month. I don't quite know how we'll stand it. She's so particular. But she suffered a loss. She's grieving, so she's disinclined to stay home alone in Charlottetown since her companion passed away."

"Her companion?" Y/n asks.

Diana frowns. "Her best friend forever and ever."

The three girls all share a smile as both Anne and Diana rests their heads against Y/n's who was in the middle of them both. Still with linked arms, the best friends continued getting closer and closer to school.

"Aunt Josephine never married. Neither of them did. They lived with each other their whole lives." Diana informs.

Anne smiles, glancing between them. "I'd live with you two forever if I could, but I know you'll both leave me the day you two get married to some wealthy and handsome gentlemen. I hate them both already."

"How's Gilbert, Y/n?" Diana questions with a teasing smile.

Y/n shakes her head, feeling her cheeks heat up. "You're not funny."

"You see him almost every day after school, do you not?" Diana reminds.

Anne nods. "Oh, yes, she does. Sometimes, she never stops talking about him."

"That's not true! And it's not because I want to see him. It's because I have to." Y/n tells them both.

Though she said those words out loud, Diana and Anne knew she was lying to them and herself. Even Y/n, herself, knew so.

"Mr. Phillips makes me go. I've explained this to Ruby. Do I have to explain it to you two as well?" Y/n continues. "I want to beat Gilbert fair and square when he comes back to school."

"Is his father almost well?" Anne asks.

Y/n stops in her tracks, frowning. "I think I'm a terrible person."

"What? Why?" Diana questions, sharing a confused look with the redhead.

"I hadn't thought about it before." Y/n states, still not answering their questions.

Anne furrows her brows. "Hadn't thought about what?"

Y/n let's out a sigh. "It's very likely Gilbert's father isn't going to get well. So it's more than possible that when Gilbert finally comes back to school... he'll be an orphan."

Just then, the sound of the school bell ringing fills the air, signaling that class was going to start any minute. As Y/n continues to frown, wishing she could've done something for Gilbert in a way, Anne and Diana grab both her hands, the three walking into school.

A few days go by and the twins, Marilla and Matthew find themselves wearing all black clothing as they walked in a line. Y/n kept her e/c eyes trained on Gilbert who was at the front of the line. She felt incredibly guilty. Currently, they were at Gilbert's father's funeral. All the families and civilians that knew Mr. Blythe and/or knew Gilbert had came.

Eventually, they all come to a stop where the priest starts reading from the bible as they all stood in front of Mr. Blythe's grave. Y/n kept her eyes on Gilbert who was staring sadly at his father's grave that wasn't even buried yet, just the casket being shown. Anne takes a glance at her sister, gently bringing her hand out of her pocket and grabbing her twin's hand, holding it in hers.

Marilla stood on the other side of Y/n, her arms crossed as a frown laid on her face. She had known Gilbert's father for a long time, they had been rather close. Matthew glances at his sister and gently rests his hand on hers, to which she reciprocates the actions and places her other hand on top of his, both her and Y/n grateful of the comfort that their siblings were giving them.

After the priest had finished speaking, everyone began dispersing as Y/n takes a step forward, her hand leaving her sister's. Anne slowly begins walking away with Marilla and Matthew, glancing back at her sister and watching as she takes a few steps towards Gilbert who didn't look up from his father's grave.

Figuring it was best to leave him to himself at the moment, Y/n takes steps back from him, walking back and walking beside her sister as they leave the boy to himself. As she walks, the e/c eyed girl takes one last glance at the boy.

Seating himself on a bench, Gilbert glances up, watching her retreating figure before looking back down at his father's grave.
