(Pic is a beautiful fall morning from a few weeks ago! I love fall in Oregon. Max is absolutely right when she says it's the perfect season.)

Warnings: Mentions of suicide and violence

"Okay... who's idea was this again?" Max asked as she followed behind Rachel and Chloe casting her flashlight at the trees and bushes, just waiting for something to jump out at them.

"Definitely Rachel." Chloe said. "My idea was to go out, get as much candy as possible and then get high and eat it all in one night."

"Which is unhealthy and boring." Rachel said. "Hiking to a secluded abandoned house in the woods is far more interesting. Wouldn't you say Max?"

Something rustled in the bushes and Max bolted forward to be closer to Chloe.

"Right now I'd take anything to this." Max said.

Chloe laughed.

"There it is." Rachel said spookily.

She pointed her light up ahead to a small clearing where an old dilapidated house stood. The windows were all broken and a few had been boarded up in an attempt to keep local teens out. But it clearly did nothing, seeing as they were there now.

"Do you believe in ghosts Max?" Rachel asked quietly.

Max swallowed nervously.

"Yeah..." She said, pointing her flashlight at one of the open windows.

"I don't." Chloe chimed in. "I think it's all a bunch of dumb stories people use to scare each other."

"No one asked you Chloe." Rachel said.

Chloe stuck her tongue out.

"Careful with that tongue." Rachel said, smirking.

"What are you gonna do about it?" Chloe asked, winking.

"Hey guys?" Max interrupted. "Does anyone else see that shadow in the window up there?"

Rachel flashed her light in the same direction but there was nothing there.

"Uh... you okay Max?" Rachel asked. "There's nothing there."

"I swear! There was a figure there just a second ago." Max said.

"It was probably just an old curtain or something." Chloe said. "There's no windows left, easy for the wind to get in."

"What wind?" Rachel asked.

She had an excellent point. They were surrounded by trees and undergrowth and it was dead silent. Not a single leaf had moved since they'd arrived.

"Look, you were probably just seeing things. When you expect to see them, you do." Chloe said.

Rachel and Max exchanged a look.

"Well, we came all this way. Might as well take a peek inside." Rachel said, leading the way towards the old house. "Have you heard the story of this place Max?"

"No." Max said.

"Well, they say years ago there was a family that lived here. They kept reporting strange sounds and intruders in the house but whenever the police showed up there was no one there and no evidence of a break in. The whole town assumed the family was crazy and one night when they called in an incident the police refused to show up. Claiming there would be no one there. A few days passed and no one in town had heard from the family. The police finally decided to drop by after a week or so and found each member of the family dead from what appeared to be suicide. The little girl had hung herself in the closet, the son had slit his own throat in the bathtub, the dad had shot himself in the head and the mother had seemingly overdosed on sleeping pills. They did a full investigation and found no evidence of foul play and so the case was closed as suicides. Why each member of the family had decided to end their own lives, no one knows."
