LELAN
I really did enjoy talking with Nina's mom while waiting inside the house for Nina to return and once we noticed both her and her dad were laughing while walking inside, I felt glad that they talked and it looks like they were able to move past their issues.
Her mom had a big smile and I heard a big sigh of relief as well.
I stood up the moment he began walking towards me and he held out his hand as I shook it.
"It's a pleasure to meet you, Sir." I greeted him.
"You as well." He says. "Well, since that took us longer than expected, why don't we grill up some steaks and have a nice dinner together?" Her dad suggests.
"Sure." I replied as I looked at Nina who smiled back at me.
"Oh but, aren't we supposed to check in?" Nina points out.
"We have all night." I assure her.
"Check in? To a hotel?" Her mom asks.
"Yeah. We got a hotel. Remember, I mentioned it to you the other day?!" Nina tells her.
"Oh, I thought you were joking. You don't need to waste any money for a hotel. You can stay here." She offers.
"Thanks but..." Nina began to turn down the offer but her mom interrupted her stating she won't accept 'no' for an answer.
Neither Nina or I could disagree or argue with her mom, so we just ended up agreeing to stay. Her mom even mentioned that they didn't mind if we slept in the same bedroom.
"Uh, honey?" Her dad cleared his throat as soon as her mom made that suggestion.
"I can sleep on the couch." I chuckled with an understanding where he is coming from.
"Oh my god, they are more than old enough first of all and second, I'm sure they have already been doing stuff together." Her mom states.
"Mom!" Nina snaps at her while turning bright red.
"Oh my god, I need a drink. I need to erase what you just said, out of my head." Her dad says and then he glares at me a little causing me to swallow a big lump in my throat.
"So embarrassing." Nina mutters.
"Nonsense. Your mother is right. You are both adults and....well, that's all I'm going to say about that. In fact, why don't you come out and help me Lelan and have a beer while getting to know each other?!". Her dad suggests.
Never have I been more fearful of getting hurt than I did right now in this moment. From the way he sounded when saying all of that to the eye contact he made with me, yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if he grilled me instead.
"Sure." I agreed.
We both started heading outside while Nina and her mom started heading towards the kitchen and making the sides.
While outside with her dad, I was a bit nervous, but that's typical. Then as we started talking and getting to know each other more, we both discovered we had things in common.
"You know, I have to be honest and shoot straight from the hip. That's who I am. And talking with you now, I can tell I misjudged you. After we found out you both were dating, then seeing you, we recognized you from the internet. And up until a few minutes ago, I thought you were some rich asshole that would use my daughter for some petty agreement or publicity stunt." He then starts to chuckle.
"Hell, I was getting ready to knock your ass out. But you have to understand at the same time that that is my world in there. That's my baby girl. No matter what arguments we have with each other, I will ALWAYS do whatever it takes to make sure she doesn't get hurt. I don't care how much money you have but, understand that if you were given the choice between being rich and being with my daughter." He stops himself as I can tell he is starting to choke up a bit.
"Sir, I love your daughter. Nina is like no other woman I've been with. And I appreciate your honesty as well as respect, with what all you're telling me right now. And I promise that I will never hurt her because there's no comparison or amount of money in the world, that would be as important or worth as much, as she is to me." I try to reassure him.
He continues avoiding eye contact while continuing to grill before nodding his head in agreement and then looking at me with a smile.
"Good." He smirks.
We next hear the girls come out after I offer to grblab us another beer.
While sitting around the dinner table, we all laughed together and we're getting along a lot better and sooner than I had expected but I'm not complaining.
For me, it's hard to remember the last time I sat around the dinner table with family and had this good of a time.
Then noticing at how happy Nina looked madee happy and for the first time brought a certain kind of comfort. Almost in a way, I felt like I was......home.
