Episode 28

Joe woke up the next morning by the sun shining through a small crack in the curtains shining on his face. He opened his eyes moving his head out of the way only to find out that he was still in the living room, he must have fallen asleep on the couch. He cracked a small smile when he saw Jayden fast asleep cuddled up next to him. He knew that he was growing attached to him and couldn't help but wonder whether that's what Demi would want after what he had done. He was a changed man now but that didn't excuse what he did in the past. Joe got up very carefully laying the boy on the couch curled up in a ball. Joe covered his body up with the blanket which was draped over the back of the couch before making his way over to the spare room.

"You can come through you know." Joe spoke seeing Isaac climbing off the bed running over to him giving him a hug. Joe smiled kneeling down so they were the same height hugging him back.

"Is mommy better?" He questioned it breaking Joe's heart even more. He couldn't imagine what it was like for them at such a young age.

"No buddy but she will be, she'll be sleeping for a while. She just needs her rest then she'll be back." Joe reassured pulling away from him wiping away the tear that slipped from his eye, Joe knew that Isaac was the more sensitive of the boys. He had watched them grow from just little babies admittedly without their mother knowing but he couldn't believe how much they have grown. He hates to say it but he too was starting to grow attached.

"What if she dies?" Isaac questioned again but Joe was quick to reassure him.

"She won't okay Isaac, she is in the best place now and just needs to recover." He rubbed his back gently smiling when Isaac cracked a small smile but not at Joe but at Jayden creeping up behind him, Joe looked behind him just in time to see Jayden jump on his back.

"Ah!" Jayden screamed Joe laughing as he stood up straight again Jayden now lifted up in the air his legs wrapped around his waist from the back his arms around his neck. Isaac too jumped on Joe the two of them able to pull him to the ground.

After the messed around a bit Joe made the two of them breakfast while he had a showered and changed into something clean. By the time he was finished so we're Jayden and Isaac, he helped them get changed if they needed it which they didn't need much. They were independent boys, Demi appeared to teach them everything quickly rather than waiting.

"If mommy is just sleeping can we see her?" Jayden questioned as they played a board game just the three of them. Joe was munching on his breakfast as they played. It was a Saturday and Joe will admit he'd rather be playing with these boys than spending it with Steph like he usually would have done. He hoped to clear her out of his life even if they were together for over a year.

"No Jay, I'm sorry but it's not something that you would like to see." Joe knew it wasn't best to see their mother beaten up and hooked up to many machines wouldn't be good for them. He wasn't even allowed to know the extent of her injuries because he wasn't family but it didn't look good. He knew she would pull through though, she was a strong woman.

"We want to see mommy though." Isaac argued slightly moving his piece as he rolled the dice.

"Sorry boys but not really suitable but as I've said before she'll be awake in no time and wanting to see you." He encouraged them to get the idea out their heads. Maybe when she had recovered more and she didn't look like she was on her death bed they could see her but before then it just wasn't suitable for seven year olds to see.

"Soon could be ages though." Isaac mumbled.

"How about after lunch we make her some get well soon cards? I'll drop them off on my way to work on Monday after dropping you two off with some flowers." Joe suggested.

"Yeah!" They both exclaim Joe not helping but laugh, he would try his best to keep them happy until their mother was better.
