Shisui had been trained well enough to know that no matter what emotions you felt, the mission always came first. It was practically the first law in the ninja handbook -- something that had been instilled into their brains their first day at the Academy.
So that's what he's doing.
He's putting the mission first.
Only two days had passed since the shocking bomb Naruto had dropped on him and Kakashi. And while he was processing everything she had told him, most of his time had been spent pouring over blueprints for Hanzo's compound as the six of them prepared to invade and conquer.
Time in the ANBU has taught him to be as silent as the sneaky shadows that covered their form through sunlight, and he knew Kakashi was much the same. Naruto, while loud and boisterous, could be quiet when she really wanted to.
He's very much aware of his surroundings even though his eyes haven't left the trio that Naruto's cousin and his friends make up on ground level. They're hiding behind a gigantic steel monolith that's been polished and eroded by the constant torrent of rain that Amegakure brings. The skies are purple like they've been since he's arrived, and the faintest drizzle dusts over his face and sends his hair into untameable waves.
Naruto is one branch down to his right, and Kakashi is in the tree down from her.
They're supposed to be infiltrating Hanzo's quarters, with the three of them being the backup squad. Really, they'll be trailing behind to make sure nothing goes wrong, and taking care of the stragglers as they come.
Another helpless flash of irritation sparks in him as he catches a glimpse of Naruto in his peripheral vision. He'd never do anything to jeopardize the mission but he's so mad he can barely see straight. He'd made the promise to both of his closest friends, but he could make promises while still being fueled with anger.
And the truth was that Shisui couldn't believe Naruto had opted to sit in silence rather than tell him about his clan -- his family's impending demise. She hadn't told him that his baby cousin had been forced to slaughter the entirety of their blood relations. She hadn't told them about Obito, the kind and bright Obito who would end up being a mass murderer and an international criminal. It was kind of amazing that she'd been able to look at them for more than a minute without having that well of secrets boil over and spill out.
How could she even stand to look at Danzo knowing he had sentenced his entire family to death? Shisui couldn't even think about him without wanting to throw a punch or scream.
The comm link crackled in his ear, and Shisui stood fast as Kakashi's voice traveled.
"I'm in position," He said. "And I've got eyes."
"Leaving position in five, Hound," Shisui automatically reported, and then cringed. Damn. Years of working with Kakashi had really turned him into a robot.
Silence crackled in return before Kakashi was clearing his throat. "Uh... Shisui."
"I know," he huffed back. "I... know. It's just so... uh. I can't help it, sometimes. I don't really take missions anymore... outside of...."
"Shisui," Naruto's voice was sharp, and he immediately stiffened in response. "It's fine... I know."
"Right," he said bitterly, turning to look at the blonde girl. He felt his breath catch when her carved tanzanite eyes were already locked on him. "What don't you know?"
