Uchiha Shisui's eyes were closed.
He'd just woken up, but he was so unwilling to let the pictures of his dream leave him. Already, he could feel them fading as he became more aware, but wisps of gold and silver stuck with him, flying in his head like twin tails of mischief.
It was also then that he became startlingly conscious of the fact that someone was watching him.
Peeking open one eye, he was met with a shock of silver hair, untamable and as unwavering as it's owner.
"Kakashi?" Shisui rasped, sleep thick in his voice.
Kakashi didn't respond immediately. Instead, he wore an expression on his face that Shisui was certain he'd never seen before. And that was saying something. After four years of working side by side with Kakashi, and being his Anbu partner and friend, Shisui had pretty much seen everything Hatake Kakashi had to offer, whether it be with his words or his actions, his facial expressions, or his gestures. Anything at all.
So to see an expression so foreign to him, had Shisui promptly opening his other eye, if only to analyze the other's face.
"You were dreaming," Kakashi stated plainly, his face twisted up in that strange way. "Do you remember what you were dreaming about? You said Naruto's name."
"I mean..." Shisui thought that he had been dreaming, yes, but other than the gold and silver playing together like magic, he couldn't remember much. "Maybe," he shrugged. "I don't remember anything except for a few colors. Maybe I did say Naruto," Shisui mused, drawing his covers back down his body and letting his leg plop out. "I have been thinking about her I guess." The strange look on Kakashi's face only intensified, and Shisui couldn't help but blush. "Why?" He asked, suddenly self conscious. "Did I say anything else?"
The other boy shook his head mutely, but Shisui knew, because that was his guilty expression, that Kakashi was lying.
"Ne, Kakashi," Shisui complained, feigning nonchalance and stretching his whole body out so that his joints cracked. "Don't bite your tongue now when you've never done so before. Tell me."
"You didn't say anything!" Kakashi spluttered. The Uchiha noted with a hint of pleasure that he could hear the minute shift in octaves Kakashi's voice had made when he had tried to lie. It was getting too easy to read the other boy. It made him happier than it should.
"Who do you think I am that you can lie to me? Just spit it out already."
He rubbed a hand over his eyes as he waited for the other boy to respond.
"It's just..." Kakashi started, charcoal eye trained on Shisui with frighteningly dialed intensity. "You also said... my name. Why'd you do that?"
Shisui froze, positively mortified. It felt like a wrecking ball had just dropped into the bottom of his stomach. And then he was suddenly very aware of how his father was out of town for the night, and how Kakashi's lithe body was sitting on the edge of his bed, not even a mere two feet from his, and how the moonlight from outside casted his friend in an adoringly ethereal glow. He was so beautiful.
Focus! he snapped at himself. Now was not the time for hormonal-teenage boy thoughts to go rampaging around.
"Well, seeing as you're my Anbu partner, I'd say you frequent enough in my everyday life for it to bleed over into my dreams too," He played off, hoping that Kakashi would blister over it with his simple explanation. "Don't worry, Kaka-kun, you're not special."
He expected the other boy to scoff and make a sarcastic quip, the way he tended to do. But he didn't, and that caught him off guard. What could he have said?
