Chapter 14

My eyes flickered open. I was excepting to be lying in the dirty alley but I was greeted with the sound of my sister’s voice. I tried to lift my head but a shooting pain shot up my back, then it all came back to me, the alley way, the beating and Karla. I looked round the room, this definitely wasn’t the alley way, it took a few minutes before I realised I was lying on the sofa in my living room.

A man’s voice carried throughout the house, but it wasn’t Noah’s. The voice was familiar to me; what was he doing here? I wanted to turn my head and see if it was him but my eyes were becoming heavy again, I was slipping my darkness.

“Oh Marie, I’m so sorry I wasn’t there to help you” my sisters cries wake me up from my sleep. My eyes flickered open my see my sister kneeling in front of me; her eyes were red and swollen from crying.

“Oh thank god you’re awake, you don’t realise how scared I was” she sniffled before pulling me into her embrace. I let out a yelp causing her to release me straight away. “Marie I’m so sorry” her eyes were racking over my body; her eyes were full of fear and guilt.

“It’s okay, I’ll be fine” I wanted to reassure her I was fine, I didn’t want her to feel guilty for what happened, it wasn’t her fault.

“Who brought me back?” my voice was small

“He didn’t say his name; he just said that he was from your school. Well thank god for him, he told me he heard some cries coming from the alley way and went to check and found you all curled up in a ball. He was very worried about you; I even thought he was going to cry.”

“Oh” was all I could say, I don’t know anyone who would look out for me, it could have been Jake, but then he would have stayed until I woke up.

“Anyways, I’ve ran you a bath to get you cleaned up” I smiled at Melissa. I tried to pull my body put off the sofa but another pain shot up my back. I let out a sob before I felt Melissa’s arm wrap around my body.

“Come on you, let’s get you cleaned up”

Melissa helped me all the way up stairs to the bathroom. She left me to change, I pulled my dirty jumper and jeans off my body with difficulty. Those girls rally could punch I thought to myself. I slowly turned myself round to the mirror only to see my broken body covered in black and purple bruises. I didn’t realise I have been crying until a salty liquid ran into my mouth. I removed the rest of my clothes before sinking myself in to the warm water to ease my sore limps.

I swiftly wiped my tears as there was a knock at the door.

“Come in” I had submerged myself in the water as Melissa came though.

“Just thought you would need some help washing your hair” I didn’t really want her to, I didn’t want Melissa to see my body covered in bruises but I felt myself nodding my head.

“I remember having to do this when mom wasn’t in when you were little” I smiled at the memory, I would always beg Melissa to wash my hair, she was so gentle where as my mom was rough.

Melissa’s hands worked the shampoo in to my hair before washing it out. These were the times I loved with me and Melissa; I just wish something bad didn’t have to happen for her to treat me so kindly.

“Okay then, I’ll leave you to change then come down for something to eat okay?”

“Actually Melissa would it be okay if I went to get into bed, I just really want to lie down and get some sleep”

“No of course, it’s been a long day and you need all the rest” she turned to leave the bathroom.

“Thank you” my low was quiet and soft. I wasn’t even sure if Melissa even heard it.
