Chapter 14
Onwards
Dawn
We had lunch together all having a can of whatever each. Katrissa ate before she started her driving shift. I sat next to Echo as we talked about Fall Out Boy and other bands while eating. Alice and Ace sat behind us just talking about random stuff. At the front of the bus in the four seater, sat Ender, Scarlette, Claude and Faye. And finally just in the middle sat Blake and Dean messing around, mostly because Blake was restless but Dean was on the tired side.
I'd observed many things now that I've spent more than twenty four ours with all my friends. I always thought Dean and Blake's friendship was cute and like everyone else teased them about how close they are, but I'd also noticed that sometimes Ace seemed a little 'jelly'. It definitely wasn't love, it was just Dean and Ace are best friends but when they are with the group and not in class, Dean spends a lot of time with Blake. Echo told me many times not to question why Blake and Ace didn't get along, sometimes you could even call them rivals. But in the end the only time that they would both work together to do, is to cheer up or make Dean happy if he was down or upset. The two of them both saw Dean as an older brother. Also, we'd always call Dean the 'father' of the group, but a while ago we came up with a system; Echo was the father, Katrissa was the mother, Dean was the grandmother (Echo's side), Faye the grandfather(Katrissa's side), Blake the 'dawg', Ender was the oldest daughter who moved out, Scarlette was the second youngest daughter who knows everything, me being the third oldest sister, Ace the youngest son (but at times everyone would call him the 'daughter' because of his long hair), Alice was our first cousin, Claude was the 'distant cousin' and finally Suki was our second distant cousin. Thinking about her brought tears to my eyes, but I was quickly snapped out of it, by Echo grabbing my hand asking me if I was alright.
"Oh yeah I'm fine."I half laughed back ad I wiped away the tears, I wasn't even that close to Suki.
Echo immediately engulfed me in a tender hug, just like a mother... Or should I say father....
"Hey Ace C'm'ere!"Dean ordered over his shoulder.
"Nooooo.... I can't be bothered! And why do you want me?"He groaned stubbornly back, but as soon a he finished his second line, Echo burst into laughter.
"'cause-"Echo started but instead of finishing of her sentence, she just created a circle with two fingers on one hand and with the other hand she slipped her pointer through the hole. She then continued to pull it in and out aggressively.
"Oh my gosh Echo!"I exclaimed getting her joke and Ace laughed, Dean giving her the death glare.
"I didn't say anything," Echo raised her hands defensively.
"Technically you did..." Dean grumbled.
"ANYWAY! I want to plait your hair!"Dean continued.
"If my hair becomes all boofy and wavy like last time I'm gonna stab a biatch."Ace reassured before standing up and sitting in front of Dean.
After a lot of sharp turns and screaming we finally reached the Bus Depot... But sped right past it.
"What the hell, Katrissa! It's right there!"Alice panicked as she pointed back at the bus depot.
"I know but we were speeding and we cant just stop just like that!"Katrissa shouted back as she started to make a sharp U turn, the tires screeching against the road.
"Katrissa! This is not a good idea!!"Scarlette exclaimed as we all held on to a pole or a seat or anything.
That's when I legit felt my whole world turn sideways... Which it basically did. The whole bus was now in its' side, the wall and windows now on the floor and the other side of the bus, the roof.
"My gosh!"Faye shouted as she scrambled to her feet.
"Frick!"Katrissa tried to get out of her little drivers compartment, side wards as Echo dashed over to help.
"Is everyone alright?"Echo asked from the other side.
"Depends on what you call ok..."Ace answered wearily.
"Well then... There goes another chipped tooth." sighed Alice as she slipped her finger into the small missing gap in her front tooth.
"Wow Alice! Are you ok?"Ace exclaimed as she ran over to help.
I glanced quickly around to see if anyone needed help, helping Claude to his feet. As expected Blake was all over Dean in a really weird and probably awkward position.
"Oh my gosh you guys get a room!"I laughed as Blake gave me a soar look.
Ace hurried over with Alice to help Dean and Blake up as well.
"Well... We'll also have to get a new bus while we're at it. Take all the supplies we have."Echo ordered as she took a bag full of food supplies, Dean and Alice taking the medical stuff.
"Hey... How're we suppose to get out then?"Alice asked, realizing that the sides had no holes in them and the windows were only below them or above them.
"Step aside peasants! I've always wanted to do this." Ace held her hedgers up to the windows above staring through the window.
Realizing what she was about to do was stupid, Dean, Echo and Faye started to shout a her as Katrissa just threw her jacket over Ace's face as he blindly stabbed through the window, glass falling on her.
"Make sure you don't cut yourself so..."Ace started to blindly hack at the left over glass on the frame of the window, until all the glass was gone.
He finally brought his hedgers down tiredly, taking the jacket off his face, brushing off the broken glass.
"Aww... They're a little dented."Ace murmured, seriously looking upset as he brought the hedge cutters to his chest.
"Hashtag Ace x Hedge cutters!"Echo laughed.
"So we lift people up and out?"I asked as I looked through the broken hole Ace had created.
"I guess... So we'll start with the lightest person..."As soon as Dean finished off his sentence, everyone's head Immediately turned to Ace.
He was the shortest out of all of us and probably the lightest. But maybe Claude was lighter since he was really tall and skinny.
"I hate all of you." he sighed as he tried to avoid it.
"Ace! Because you're really small and cute!"Claude said innocently blunt as he reached out to ruffle around Ace's long hair.
Echo and Dean immediately grabbed him starting to lift him up. Since they had actually picked him up a few times before it was easy. Ace had strong arms so it was easy for him to lift himself up onto the top.
"Next."Ordered Dean as all of us turned to Claude as he smiled innocently at us, tilting his head slightly.
"C'mon Claude you're next."Faye smiled putting on a little funny voice.
Claude nodded quietly as he stepped underneath the broken window as they lifted him up to Ace who helped him get up on the top as well. Next was Blake, Alice, me, Faye, Katrissa, Dean, with Ender helping instead, Scarlette, Ender and finally Echo who got up easily, being tall and fit. As we stood above the ground, we started to plan out what we were going to do when we got down. I noticed that as Blake held his bat there was a sense of uncomfortableness and sorrow.
"Let's split into four groups. Echo and Dawn, go look for keys for a new bus. Blake, Dean and Ace stay here and make sure we don't attract to much attention and everything's clear or anything's coming-" Katrissa started but was interrupted with Ace and Echo coughing and laughing.
We all rolled our eyes as Katrissa continued.
"Claude, Scarlette come with me, we'll look for any supplies in one section and Faye, Alice n' Ender do the other side."Katrissa ordered as we all nodded, Ace and Echo still giggling and coughing about something.
She lifted up her nail gun as everyone else did the same with their own weapon, myself gripping my pickax.
"Hey! We'll be like The Three Musketeers!" laughed Dean as he head locked Ace and Blake underneath his arm pits.
"More like The Three Not-so Musketeers."Ace mumbled back.
There were only a few Walkers around the area, about ten at the most.
"Three..."started Faye as my heart started to fasten it's pace.
"Ichi... Ni..."interrupted Ace with a smile.
I think it was Japanese I wasn't really sure... I quickly started to panic, not remembering any Japanese we had learnt. Was he counting? what number was he up to?
"San!"he shouted as everyone jumped off the bus at once, Immediately running to their allocated job.
I landed perfectly and started to run straight for the gates leading to the bus depot. I quickly glanced back and forward, unusually I was ahead of most of us. Then I realized everyone was stuck in battle, I'd actually just been able to duck past the Walkers. I quickly ran back, ready to fight with he others. It didn't take long before we were all running together for the gates. We were all holding at least a bag each of medical or food supplies, so it was a little annoying to run with it. As soon as we reached the gates, Blake Dean and Ace all stopped and stood the sides of the gates.
"Good luck Dawny-Poo."Ace winked at me as I glared back at him in annoyance.
But as soon as I turned back to looking forward I realized I was practically surrounded by buses. As If I was stuck in the maze from The Maze Runner... Except the walls are all buses... And there are no Grievers... Hopefully. But my hope of no Grievers were quickly crushed as a Walker pounced onto me like a Griever. I almost swore as I trapped my handle in-between it's sickening jaw. But it was quickly over as it's head 'magically' split right open on me.
"Echo!"I shouted 'gratefully angry', as I stood up trying to get the disgusting rotting corpse off me.
It was starting to get easier to kill these things, mentally. I hated the fact that I still was technically killing something that was once human and still living... I think. But as the days or hours would go by they started to look less human.
"Hey would you prefer me to just have left you?"she said as she gave me a cocky smile.
"Yes!"I exclaimed back annoyed as she just returned a raised eye brow.
We quickly hurried through the bus maze when I realized something. Did Katrissa tell us a time or anything? How do we know when to come back
"Hey Echo did Katrissa give us a time?"I asked in between a pant.
"Nup. Just complete the task, return and we'll just have to wait until everyone comes."Echo replied, followed by a held back laugh.
"Oh 'That's what she said'."I half laughed and rolled my eyes, Echo bursting into immature laughter.
A/N OK NOW IMMA NOT EVEN SURE IF MY 'MAZE RUNNER' REFERENCES WERE RIGHT BUT JUST SUCK IT UP WITH YOUR VIRGIN ASS OK?
