Chapter 12

Patrol Station

Faye

We Immediately ran into battle, our jackets protecting us from their teeth and nails. I quickly swung my bat to the left, plunging it into an infected's skull. They're not human. They're not human. They're not human!

"Not human!"I shouted as I took out three Walkers at once.
I had to continuously remind myself that they were not human. Last night in the bus when I was talking to Ender and the others, we had created a name for the infected, calling them 'Walkers', but other than that we just referred to them as 'the infected', 'zombies' or just the 'undead.'
"Shit! We're not gonna make it through!"shouted Scarlette, ahead of us, while she swung her sword into a pack of Walkers.
"YES WE ARE!"shouted Dean as he ran forward past us, an open umbrella in hand. In the bus there were a few belongings that people left behind when the virus first broke out.
We all rushed behind her running in the pathway that she cleared.
"GO! GO! GO!"I shouted as we ran across the road to the petrol station.
I watched as they ran ahead of me, turning back to see if we had left anyone behind. I suddenly felt a strong hand grab my shoulder, dragging me back into the mob. I fell back in the shock, dropping my guard. And before I knew it my fingers were in the mouth of an infected. My whole body went cold as its' rotting teeth sunk into my fingers, my own blood spurting out.
I stared at in shock, only to see the end of a sharp rod suddenly stick right out of its forehead. It Immediately hit the floor, revealing Suki.
"You can thank me later!" Scarlette cringed as she ran towards us, sword in hand, bringing the blade straight into my fingers. I screamed in pain as I felt Blake and Dean quickly grab me, dragging me with them to the petrol station. As soon as we reached there, Blake and Scarlette ran off to protect the area. There weren't as many infected in this area, but we still needed to be quick because, the group was waiting for us back at the bus, and there was a pack of them across the road. My vision Immediately went blurry with tears and my head spinning from the amount of blood. Dean and Suki keeled beside me, Suki quickly passing him the bandages we took with us. Dean's shaking hands applied pressure to the stumps of my once-there- fingers. I only had my pinky and thumb left, on my left hand. I closed my eyes in pain as Dean washed it out with some alcohol, quickly bandaging it up not so long after. I still tried to hold back my screams, trying to think of my family. But that just made it worse, worrying them. I couldn't let Ace down. I closed my eyes one last time, before picking myself up, grabbing my bat with my right hand.
"You ok Faye?"Dean and Suki asked worringly.
"Y-Yeah. C'mon we have to move."I said in-between groans of pain.
"Guys! They're getting closer!"Scarlette shouted, over her shoulder.
We all glanced over at the pack of infected, slowly making their way across the road, some losing interest and wondering off.
"Suki, Blake and Faye go into the shop and see if you can find a carton or like a big jug to fit in as much petrol as we can. Bring it out and we'll fill it up."Dean ordered as we nodded and headed in, Blake running in last.
"We'll stay by the doors, and make sure nothing comes in."Scarlette shouted as she slammed her back on the doors.
As we ran into the small shop, the strong smell of petrol lessened. The white floor was slippery with blood and a lot of the shelves were tipped over. The shop wasn't very big so we didn't have to be so worried about everything. I quickly rushed over to the fridges, finding the huge jugs of water at the bottom shelves. I Immediately dragged out the huge jug, plonking it on the floor and looking for a place to poor out the water. I tried to ignore the little voice at the back of my head telling me what a waste of water it is.  I quickly glanced down the aisle slightly just to see Suki slip into the shadows of the back. I ignored it and continued to work, but froze when her footsteps were followed by an ear piercing scream.
"Shit."I heard Blake murmur, not too far from me, as we both dropped what we were doing.
Round the back of the shop was an open door leading into darkness, but as soon as we ran into the small back room, the light flooded onto a rotting figure over Suki. She screamed as I acted quickly swinging my bat straight into the back of the Infected's skull. But all it did was reveal the sight that I dreaded. Suki looked up at us painfully, crimson tears falling from her face. I tried my hardest to take my gaze away from it but I just couldn't, on the side of Suki's neck was a huge bloody bite mark, black veins started to branch off from the mark across her body.
"I-I d-don't-t wa-ant-t to d-die as o-one of t-them. P-please-e l-l-let-t me d-die human-n"she gasped at us chocking back her tears.
We were running out of time, in a few seconds she would be infected and one of them. But I just froze I had never killed anyone and in this situation my brain just didn't work. I turned my head slightly to Blake, only to see him nod lightly, but I was unable to see his face, covered by his scruffy hair.
"T-tha-ank-k y-yo-ou-u."she smiled, her body slowly getting infected as she lay before us.
And before I knew it her skull was broken inwards by Blake's cricket bat. His hands shook harshly as he tried to lift the bat out of Suki's corpse but just couldn't get a grip of it. I glanced down slightly at the tiles he had painted crimson. The blood kept on flowing until it reached my feet. I tried desperately to break back to reality but just couldn't. I couldn't even feel myself Breathing, thinking, my own heart beating. Just staring blankly at the sight before me.
"Ngh."I heard the first little sob escape from Blake's lips, as his hands started to shake more violently, trying to grip the bat.
I watched as he clenched his teeth as tears rolled down his cheeks and collecting at the bottom of his chin. I could almost feel his tears touch the scarlet floor. And soon enough I felt myself following his actions, hot tears just leaking from my eyes. I tried my hardest to be strong, a part of me reminding me of the situation we were in and that I needed to take control I've my emotions. Now. I flipped my hair out of my face as I took a ragged breath, I reached out for Blake's hands, wrapping my warm fingers around his cold shaking ones. Yes, I was also shaking, but not as bad as him. He turned his shaking head at me, tears continuing to flow.
"C-C'mon. L-Let's go."I murmured as I gripped his hands gently helping him pick up the bat and turning for the door.
But just before we left I bent down to her body, carefully slipping off the red spotted hair tie she seemed to always wear around her wrist, well of what Ace had told me. I quickly tapped her forehead, chest left shoulder then right, followed by doing the same to myself. I jumped up rushing over to the shaking figure by the door. For a second I looked at Blake and thought of Ace, they were the same age and same gender. Think of him as your brother, just for now
"C'mon Baka."I growled in-between another un even breath. I grabbed his wrist and dragged him over to the huge water bottle I had found before. Quickly tipping it over, draining out the water, it was like pouring white paint over the dyed tiles. We quickly rushed back out, trying not to slip and handing Dean the bottle as he hurried over to the pumps. He hardly looked at us, but I think he just noticed how white our faces were.
"Which one is it?"Dean asked panicking, for we were running out of time.
"Hey guys..  Where's Suki?"Scarlette brought up, for a second the image for her bloody corpse flashed in my mind, but I quickly dismissed it.
"Uh..."I tried to remember filling up the car last time with dad.
"That one."I quickly pointed at the pump on the far right ad Dean nodded and started to fill up the bottle.
"Where's Suki?"Dean and Scarlette both asked together.
This time there was no escaping it, no implying that we didn't hear them. I quickly glanced over to Blake, only to see his pale wet face.
"S-She's in a b-better p-pla-ace."I attempted. But when I looked back over to them their faces were both purely white, understanding what I meant. Dean looked as if he tried to shake it off for a second, and get back to reality, to get back to saving everyone else. He quickly flipped his messy hair out of his face and stood up, heaving up the heavy jug.
"L-Let's go."he stuttered, trying to hold back tears.
We quickly ran and fought our way back to the bus. But I wasn't registering anything that I was doing or happening. As we neared the bus a nail shot right past my head hitting an infected behind me straight through the head.
"Wow, Alice! Be careful!"scolded Alice as they covered us.
As soon as we reached the doors, they folded inwards,  allowing us to run in. Claude immediately closed the doors and slammed down on the pedals, speeding straight ahead.
"Where's Suki?"asked Dawn, breaking the silence with her sweet innocent voice.
My heart stopped again. I didn't want to break this to Claude. Plus Suki's death, distracted me from the killing pain in my hand. Ace rushed over to My side from the window, immediately taking my chopped up hand in his. He opened his mouth to ask what happened, but I knew I had to answer Dawn's question. I noticed tears started to fall from Blake's eyes as Dean wrapped his arms around him, pulling his head into his chest.
"S-Suki, got inf-fected."I finally spoke up as I felt tears started to form in my eyes again.
I hardly knew her yet it still hit me hard.
"I-I-I."started Blake in-between muffled sobs, Dean only drawing him closer.
"I-I k-k-i-il-l-led-d h-he-e-r-r."Blake was able to say before drowning in tears, grabbing Dean's shirt.
"No you didn't. You saved her,"I snapped, she didn't, it wasn't her fault.
Ace wrapped his arm around my shoulder, drawing me close to his chest, trying to comfort me.
