 Chapter 30

Sit Your Ass Down And Play Chess!

Katrissa

(A/N I know I haven't done Echo in while but I wanted to do Katrissa so deal bitches)

Tears started to prick my eyes, before blurring my vision and rolling down my cheeks. My fingers were shacking, my hand still reached out as If I expected him to suddenly appear out of no where and take my hand.
"A-Ace..."I heard Echo mumbled before her shaking legs gave in as she crumpled to the floor, her back hitting the corner harshly.
I observed her for a moment. Her wide eyes, like glass, rivers running down her cheeks. But even so, everything I saw just simply blurry. My nose started to clog up as my throat started to ache. It only got worse as my chest started to tighten, and it just felt. It just felt as if I was suffocating. Getting buried alive. Drowning. Locked in a small box with no doors, windows, ventilation. Nothing. As if air couldn't reach my lungs. I almost felt, abandoned. Betrayed. Lost. I let out a sickening cough, or even a groan, as I slid down the wall of the lift. Joining Echo on the floor. And for once. She placed her hand on mine and smiled warmly at me. I'm not saying she'd never been there for me, or touched me, or tried to help, support me or anything! She was a beautiful and kind person. But I guess even through all that I never felt that she was actually there for me, like we'd never been the bestest friends as in very close. It only clicked then. Her hurt smile. The painful look in her eyes, screamed the same I was going through. The same pain that tightened my chest. The same pain that caused my vision the blur, tears to roll down my cheeks. The same pain that made me feel like I was drowning. For once I felt as if she truly understood me. And I couldn't have asked for anything better. My tears only started to stream faster as she cried harder as well. Even though I fidgeted as she shook, we sat. Being there for each other mentally. Just as if understanding each other's pain. And no matter how sad the moment was. I somehow felt happy. I was finally feeling a connection with someone. Not love no, just no. Ew. Not that I have an issue with gays. But not me and Echo just no. Just a connection that clicked, and we understood each other without words. No matter how much I love English though.
Eventually our eyes drifted off to the numbers on the side. We hadn't picked a level yet so we still just sat in a still lift.
"Would you like to do the honors?"I asked dramatically half bowing towards the keys.
"I'll do the key and you can press the button since you love poking things so much." Echo replied as she grabbed the keys.
"That's what she saaaiiiddd."I hummed in response with a wink.
She replied with a teary laugh, before picking out the key with a red end, matching the circle around the key hole. As soon as she slipped it in and turned, four more buttons above the rest lit up. We both smiled at each other glad that everything was working out... At the moment.
"What level should we go to?"I asked, as Echo gave me a look as if she'd totally forgotten that we didn't even know which level the security room was on.
"hmmmm.... Choose a number between 1 and 80?" she suggested wearily as I rolled my eyes.
"Fine, we can just go to each level, see which one is the clearest/safest, look for one of those mapy thingos and work from there."
Instead of replying I just nodded and pressed my pointed nail into the glowing number '5'. There were already four levels for the public and then another four for labs and such. As soon as we started moving up the elevator suddenly jolted and started heading back down again.
"What the f*ck?"Echo and I quickly grabbed on to the railings to try and steady ourselves.
"This better not be some Resident Evil crap!"She shouted, grabbing her meat clever, ready to decapitate whatever or whoever walked into the lift.
"Calm down. The person who called for the lift or whatever must have like VIP ID or the keys or some shit. Otherwise the lift wouldn't have been programed to just ditch it's original job and head down to the more important level to pick up the VIP person."I explained calmly put still refilling my bleach gun just in case.
"Sooo... Are you saying they might possibly be an employee?"I nodded in response just in time to here the 'ding'.
I glared at the metal doors as they drifted away from each other revealing a middle aged woman. She looked around her early forties or even late thirties. But more than anything she looked like the cliche mother. A calm expression was calved onto her face as she casually stepped in to the lift, the doors closing after her. Echo and I both stood in shock. Maybe expecting, well I dunno. Not her?? We glanced at each other before turning back to her peaceful look. Her eyes were closed as she nodded her head from side to side, humming 'three blind mice'. I still didn't let my guard down, it got even freakier when I noticed Echo's dead look down at her arms. Wrapped in her arms sat a child's head, there were still ripped skin and muscles dangling out from it's neck, along with it's hollow eyes. The head seemed to be a boy's but you could hardly tell by how disembodied it was. Even it's lips were rotting away almost melting off it's skull like the rest of the rotting skin, exposing a mucky green, red and white skull. Half of it's hard had been, I don't know, smooshed off? Exposing more of the rotting skull. The worse was that even though he was completely dead his skin and hair still seemed to be moving, which I assumed was due to all the maggots and such having a feast. Even one of his eye sockets was completely empty, leaving a clear pathway to into his skull where well there was just more rotting bloody flesh. The other eye was still wide, most of the eye lid eaten away but the eye itself still a little fresh, mostly covered with bright red veins and black worms that seemed to be eating away from an inner layer. My eyes quickly dashed away from the sight as I started to feel something bubble up from my throat. And there it was, shattering the silence.
"HHAHHAHAHAHAHA!!!"Echo and I started to laugh our asses off in unison.
The lady looked at us curiously, clearly confused about what we were laughing at. She was quite beautiful, and they blood that painted almost 'neatly' across her face added to her beauty. It wasn't just the head that we were laughing at but how she looked. Her household dress was a dull blue along with a light pink apron and pale green flats with a small heel. But still her clothes were literally drenched in blood, worse than ours. And all she had in her petite hands was the largest kitchen knives in an average household.
"Argh my stomach hurts!"Echo gasped as she clutched her stomach.
I tried to keep my glasses on my face as my body continued to shake with laughter. Eventually we'd finally stopped laughing. Our giggling starting to die down.
"I'm so sorry, that was really rude of us. I'm Katrissa by the way."I finally turned to her smiling as I offered her my hand that I just un-gloved.
"I'm Lillian, and this is Rye, my youngest and oldest, only son."she spoke cheerily as she shook my hand with her extremely bloody and covered in 'Rye's' rotten flesh hand.
And of course her arms were almost sleeved in her child's rotting smooshed flesh.
"Oh and I'm Uh, Echo." They shook hands as I smirked.
"What, almost forgot your name there, did we Echo?"I joked as she shouted 'shut up' back, her blush working itself up to her cheeks.
"I'm so sorry to insist this onto you two young ladies, but may I check if you're infected?"We stared at her in shock for a moment, confused on how she was going to tell without a blood test.
"Uh yeah, sure."Echo agreed as she flashed her a weak smile.
"Don't worry I'm not infected I can prove it to you if you like. Oh and by the way, I work here, a half time doctor and scientist."Lillian flashed us her ID tag along with a bundle of keys attached to it.
"Ok so who's up first?"She smiled warmly as she placed her child's head carefully on the floor.
Lillian pulled back her hazel brown hair as she bent down to pick get something out of her backpack. Thank god she had wipes, cause I was going to let her fricking touch me with with hands like that. Cleaning off all the rotten flesh, blood and such she returned to us with an expecting look.
"Ladies first."Echo insisted as she gestured me forward with raised brows.
We both paused as if expecting for Ace's usual 'THAT'S SEXIST!!' followed by Dean's lecture about gender equality as Ace would throw in random comments agreeing or disagreeing with his points. Like honestly for two men they were both obsessed with equality, like there's nothing wrong with that. But it was just strange to find a male to feel and act so strongly about female stereotypes and equality, like equality is also about males as well. But instead we filled it with an awkward silence followed by tearful laughter.
"Ok fine."Echo finally gave in as she stepped forward.
Lillian was quite an amount taller than her, so as she had to tilt her head up before pressing her left thumb on Echo's cheek, pulling it down lightly. With her right hand she help a small black torch. Not one of those crappy ones, but the like scientific doctor scientists ones.
"Look up. And don't you dare look into this light. It's half laser, so it will blind you."She ordered with a serious expression.
"AAAHHHH THE PRESSURE!"Echo exclaimed followed with nervous laughter.
Her eyes rolled upwards until her eyes were almost all white. Her eyes ball was mostly white but also VERY blood shot, but that was normal for Echo and now for ALL of us.
"Hmm... Katrissa C'm'ere."Lillian gestured me over as I elevated myself a little on my toes to have a look at Echo's eye as well.
"See how just at the edge of her eye lid it's all read and all her veins are also red? That means she's just blood shot. An infected person has a musky touch to their eye along with the lining around the eye lid will be a little purple or blue. Some of the veins may be discoloured, such as purple, blue, black, brown and such."I nodded in interest, glad that Echo wasn't infected, but nervous for my check up.
=^*•+•*^=
Luckily none of is were infected. Lillian let us check up on her as well just in case, but when she offered us to check on Rye we both declined immediately.
"So do you know where everything is?"I asked hopefully as we still stood around in the safe elevator.
"Yep. This place is like a maze, but I know it like the back of my foot."she smiled at us brightly as Echo and I both exchanged a look.
Like the back of her foot????
"Mk. We came in a group and they want us to meet up at the security room. Could you take us there?"Echo explained as Lillian nodded.
"'We came in a group?'"I questioned while wiggling my eye brows.
Echo smuggled a laugh as Lilian gave us a questionable look, pressing her bloody finger into the third level button. It immediately lit up, the elevator finally starting to move.
"And up! up! Up! We go!"Lillian sung happily, as we smiled wearily.
"Aaannnddd here we are!"She said brightly swinging her arm towards the open doors to the third level.
We followed suit after Lillian as she guided us through the hallways killing the occasional infected. It was extremely unusual... Why weren't they in groups like before? Why weren't there more? Maybe they were all killed by Blake and Dean. After we'd killed around 8 of them I noticed they were all pathetically weak. The next time we came to an infected I held my arm back a little, stopping Echo with me, allowing Lillian take down the stronger opponent. The next was much stronger, but without hesitation Lillian was able to take it down single handedly. I'm honestly not sure what the Frick is up with her. I mean how powerful can a household mother be?? As I observed the constant flow of infected I sorted out their strengths in categories, with every strength there were about two of each type. This Reminded me of chess.
"Sit your ass down and let's play chess!"Ace declared placid down the glass chess set before me.
I lifted my bishop beside the black king's head, knocking it over with a little swing of my own piece.
"Check mate."I sighed for about the fifth time.
"NUUUUUU HOW COULD THIS BE POSSSIIBLLEE?!? I challenge you to a rematch!!!" Ace shouted at me for about the fifth billionth time, pointing his finger accusingly at me.
"Argh. Acey, we're not going to get anywhere if you just keep on sacrificing every piece you have. Use you're brain and come up with a strategy." I tapped my fingers on the glass chess board, while reseting my side.
I was never going to reveal my strategy to him, no matter what. His strategy was honestly quite idiotic, he said he knew what he was doing but I'm pretty sure he has no idea what the frick he's doing... Except with his mum...
"MWAHAHHAA!!! CHECK!!"He declared after half an hour.
I raised my eyebrows for a second before quickly realizing an easy way out.
"Check mate."I replied, flicking his black king off the board, once again, my white knight in hand.
"I hate you."He finally pouted as I rolled my eyes with a smile.

"This is like chess!"I finally declared as Echo looked as if I was insane. ... Which we all were.
"... Katrissa... I'd hate to say his but I think you're looking into this too much."Echo finally stated as I rolled my eyes.
"Sit your ass down, and let's play chess!"for a moment Echo looked at me, her expression screaming 'wtf' but it quickly changed to a little more understanding look.
She got the reference to Ace at least.
"Ok. So. We can't just let Lillian take them all down, so we need to work out a strategy to get through this shit storm."I explained, sitting down on the bloody cold floor.
"Hmmm... At then moment Lillian can take down these single handedly. So when it comes to the harder ones that she can't take down in like one blow-"Echo tilted her head to one side, as I followed suit, dodging the flying limb.
"-Then we should take turns attacking, giving our hardest and strongest hits, to take it down." I nodded as I visualized how Echo's strategy would work out, while dodging yet another flying head. Goddamn this Lillian was good.
"Or, we could do 'The Ace move' and get one person to capture all their attention, to draw them else where and most likely die." I suggested dumbly, I mean Echo and I would probably die but this Lillian could probably have a higher chance of surviving.
"But if you wanted to call it 'The Ace Move' then you'd call the person running the 'sacrifice' and the others 'Still-screwed.' and everyone dies."Echo chuckled, we'd both experienced Ace's crappy chess strategies where he loses no matter what it's just I had to deal with it wwwaaayyy more.
"Hm. Well then let's go with 'Plan A'."Just as we stood a whole pack of infected appeared at the end of the hallway.
"Shit! I thought you said this was like chess!!"We both ran forward to join Lilian in battle.
"Yeah well it WAS like chess!"I shouted back just as I sliced my kitchen knife into a Walker's chest.
"SHIT!! WHAT THE F*CK IS THIS?"I heard a familiar voice over the groans of the mob.
"BLAKE??"Echo shouts next to me, just as I catch a snippet of Dean's flaming hair.
"Yep it's them."I murmur to Echo.
"Are these your friends?"Lillian asks casually, while totally decapitating a Walker by my side.
"Yeah. The one with The hair died like a fire is Dean and the other's Blake."
"What about the other two?" I didn't notice the other two yet, but who else could they be?
Scarlette was dead, Ender infected and killed, Ace dead or infected, and Tash was Long gone. Possibly they were a new addition to our group. By the sound of a loud bark, my head snapped towards the 'new additions'.
"No! Bad Cake! If you attack them you'll get infected!"The girl scolded as she easily took of the head of a Walker with her guitar.
My heart stopped for a moment. Why must god be so cruel? Was a frickin' apocalypse not enough? Must he torment us?
"C-Claude?"I shouted dumbly.
I knew it wasn't him. For a 2 reasons. One I knew he was long gone and two, last time I checked he was male not female.
"Are these your friends?"Next to the 'gender-bend of Claude, fought yet another tormenting figure.
"You must be Dean and Blake's comrades. I'm Kumi and this is Kei."She introduced herself as I burnt off a few Infected's faces.
"Ah, yeah. Nice to meet you. I'm Katrissa. This is Echo, Lillian and the head in her arm's is her only son Rye."I explained politely, like the first time I met Claude.
"What's up with The insane Stay-Home-stereotypical-mother?"Dean threw in as we took down a few more.
"Don't worry about her. She's just... You're mum when she finds out you've been taking illegal drugs."Echo replied as I focused on the flow of infected.
The constant gathering of them was starting to get insane! We wouldn't be able to hold them for any longer or else we'd all end up dead.
"Guys! We should probably start heading down towards the labs!"Kei shouted a suggestion at the top of his small voice.
"Lillian! Lead the way!"Echo shouted an order back as she replied with a 'Yes ma'am!'
She started to lead the way down the left side hallway, the right wall just a massive glass window, a view of the deserted streets. It was already nearing day light which made it better for us since they were less active through the day. I was still caught in the main mob of the corner. And just like that. Our small population of uninfected had depleted.

A/N Well once again that ending was kind of random... Anyway next chapter shit will seriously start to go down so fast you'll be like wtf so that's a warning...
