For so long I'd lived in fight or flight, the cycle endless and overwhelming making me feel as though I was trapped. The long nights of crying myself to sleep, trying to stay as silent as possible to be left alone, putting on a brave face at school or work so that no one knew. The strength it would take the leave was something that I had to consistently work to build in me.
I spent my life longing for a sense of safety, a touch that didn't hurt, words that weren't filled with anger, a place where I felt good and at home and alive for once. I just wanted love, the kind of love where everything feels good, that you see in movies and read about in books. The opposite of what I'd grown up to know love was, the opposite of what my parents had.
Then came him, with a gentle touch, a kind smile, and warm embrace. Providing a comfort I thought I'd never know, but maybe it was all too good to be true.
