Deku's Pov
I skipped to class, excited for out hero lesson. All Might was teaching, as always, but he said he had a special assignment today. He was going to test how much better out skills had gotten since our work studies. I walked into the classroom and skipped to my seat. I looked around me to see that some of my classmates were happy and excited while others looked depressed. Not counting Tokoyami and Shinso, they always looked depressed. I looked to Kacchan curiously and he turned to me. "It's a competition." He said. I raised my eyebrow. "How do you know?" I asked. He smirked. "I asked All Might during lunch. These extras are going to fail so hard. I have no clue what the competition is, but I can guarantee they aren't going to win." I laughed at Kacchan's confidence and turned my head forward, waiting for our teacher.
All Might arrived in the room and immediately told us to grab our stuff. We quickly changed into our uniforms and headed outside. "All right class, today we are testing your improvement. I will be on a platform in the middle of ground Gamma and your job is to get there first. It's a race. First up, we'll have Midoriya, Sero..." I blocked him out. A race? I've got this. I got into position and looked at my opponents. The buzzer went off and I shot out of my starting area, quickly gaining the lead.
The training ground we were in was a representation of a factory. Metal pipes and buildings were everywhere, slowing down my running a lot. I heard a noise over to my right and I saw Sero swinging by. Dumbass, I thought, in a run down factory like this, there are always going to be loose pipes. One swing on those and you're done for. Just as I thought that, I heard a high pitched squeal. The metal pipe that he just swung on had dipped down quite a bit. Since they were industrial pipes most likely used to transport liquids from one building to another, the pipes were long, thick, and heavy. Sero's eyes widened as he realized the pipe he was on was about to fall and looked at me for help. I just smirked at him and poked my head twice, indicating to him to use his head. Then, I turned away from the scene and started running again. Another high pitched squeal and down Sero's pipe went. In a split second decision, Sero had transferred over to my pipe. I was a little ways ahead of him because after our interaction, I kept running. He started swinging himself around again and quickly caught up. We were neck and neck. He threw his tape at the pipe to try to pass me and I made a fatal mistake. I stepped right where he aimed.
Tape wrapped around my ankle and my eyes widened. Sero came barreling towards me. We collided, and my body ached. I flew backwards from the impact, being launched in the air. I tried orienting myself when I realized how high I was. Luckily, the impact had launched me in a position where I could grab the pipe on the way down, but if I missed, the collision with the ground would shatter multiple bones. I positioned myself to get ready to grab the pipe when -Clank!- It was successful. The momentum swung me around and I was launched into the air again. This time, I landed on a nearby roof. Sero looked up at me in surprise and let out a relieved laugh. I had survived.
I looked around from the building I was on and realized I could see the platform we were racing to. I could catch glimpses of it through all the pipes and the buildings. I smiled. Well, this is easy. I headed straight for the platform, quickly learning that Sero couldn't see it. He turned right and I continued going straight, smirking at the advantage I had gained from an accident. Finally the platform came in full view and my heart dropped. All Might stood there, watching my every move. I stepped onto the platform and he declared me the winner, but the eyes didn't move. More and more students joined us on the platform, but his eyes stayed glued to my back. I shivered.
Everyone had gone through the race, and as expected, Kacchan had the fastest time. Though Kacchan would be a terrible stealth hero, he was great at maneuvering in the air and getting places fast. My abilities are more suited to stealth, but I also make a great action hero. I was packing up and getting ready to go when Aizawa's voice caught my attention. "Though I know you're tired, I need to remind you. Finals are in two weeks, so study hard. Make sure to keep training among yourselves, or you will fail the hero-course exams." That was all he said before the bell rang. I grabbed my bag and tried to sprint out the door, dragging Shinso along. Key word: tried. I ran smack dab into a hard material, letting out a soft, "Oomph." I backed up a bit and saw a shirt. I rubbed my head, glaring at the face of the blond in front of me. Since I was shorter than average and happened to be leaning forward a bit when I was escaping, I was chest height with the kid in front of me. If there wasn't a large crowd around us, I would've just decked him and walked off. Wait, crowd? Kids crowded the doorway, all staring at me. Deja vu. "Why in the world would you stand in front on a doorway like that?" I said turning my wrath on the blond. His eyes glanced down to me and then to Shinso. "I'm Shiketa Motomu. I'm looking for Shoto Todoroki, Katsuki Bakugo, Tenya Iida, and Izuku Midoriya. I heard they were in the same hospital as Shinigami and I have some questions." I looked at him with a bored expression. "That's it? That's all you want? To ask me and my friends questions about that asshole?" My last sentence drew some eyes. "What? Which one are you?" Motomu asked, surprised. "Hey, Midoriya!" I heard a voice yell from the classroom. "What's taking you so lo-" Todoroki stopped as he saw the large crowd. "You're Izuku Midoriya? The only quirkless kid in the hero course and the top of your class?" Motomu asked. I nodded. "If you want information about Shinigami, you're gonna have to ask Todoroki," I said, pointing at him, "Iida, and Kacchan. They are the ones who saw him. I simply ended up in the same hospital." With that, I grabbed Shinso's wrist and dragged him away.
When I got home, the first thing I did was grab my suit. I waited for Dad to get home. He arrived at the door and I immediately grabbed his arm and pushed him to his room. He groaned and told me to wait for his shift. I huffed, took off my suit, and started training by myself, pumped for summer.
Finally, dad's shift started. I grabbed Aizawa again and dragged him outside. I started scouting and almost immediately found a target. She had dark hair. She was short and skinny, and looked very athletic. I watched her movements, and anger coursed through me. Inko Midoriya. So we meet again. I stopped my dad, who was moving towards me, and put my finger to my lips in a hushing motion. I watched Ms. Midoriya move, remembering all the times she didn't feed me, or times when she hit me because she felt like it. I hated her, just as much as I hated Hizashi Midoriya for abandoning me because I was quirkless. I'd kill them. That was a vow I had made long ago. I may carry their name, but that was only to torture them and remind myself of one of many of my duties. My name still bound me to them, and it still made me their son. I may be unwanted, but I could never be forgotten because of my name. I am quirkless, and I am Mr. and Ms. Midoriya's son. I am their failure, and I will remind them of it.
