"CAMERON!"

The start to a usual morning at the Tayor household. Mom yelling at me that I'm late, the smell of bacon, and my alarm clock going off.

"I'm coming! I yell from my bathroom as I slip my hair into a ponytail and quickly brush my teeth.

The days I wake up late, I'm usually running around like a chicken with its head cut off but not today. I got my car fixed so I don't have the ride the bus anymore.

I slip on my favorite art club shirt from middle school and a pair of Nike shorts and make my way downstairs after grabbing my book bag and keys.

My dad is a lawyer so weirdly enough he travels a lot. He gets called to do a lot of cases out of state so when he is home, he tries to help out a lot around the house. I could smell the pancakes he was making from the landing.

I grabbed a pancake and a strip of bacon while trying to put on my shoes.

"Late again?" my mom asked from the living room.

"Ugh, yes, I really need to start turning my ringer up." I tried to speak holding the pancake in my mouth.

The doorbell rang signaling that Jay was on the other side. I completely forgot it's my day to drive us to school. Jay must've given in and drove her herself. I opened the door to let an angry Jaylen in while I ran back upstairs to grab our project.

"You were late!" I could feel her mentally strangling me.

"I'm sorry, I know!" I shouted over my shoulder.

Jaylen is literally perfect. She is gorgeous and I have no idea why she's my friend. Tall and skinny with curly brown hair. She thinks she's ugly but half our school begs to differ.

I kiss mom and dad goodbye and Jay and I are off to school.

"Cameron, I have never seen you on time, you know that?" She took, more like snatched, the poster board from my hands.

"Well, I get it from my dad so blame him. Plus artistic minds are all over the place so I mean, come on." I say gesturing at my sloppy hairstyle and t-shirt.

Walking into school we get tons of greetings and not because we are junior class president and vice president. Jaylen can literally get any guy she wanted and even didn't want. It's the one thing I hate about her. I mean I'm pretty but nowhere near as pretty as my dear friend Jay.

"Does it ever annoy you?" I asked.

"What?"

"People always coming up to you, the constant staring?"

"You mean at us?

"No, I mean at you. When has anyone wanted anything to do with the short, black girl anything opposed to the tall, mixed girl? Don't get me wrong, I'm a pretty girl, but nine times out of ten a guy would pick you over me. If I wasn't your friend I'd hate you."

She chuckled and tried to place her argument but that's when he showed up. Johnathan. He loved pissing me off. I mean, I guess we're friends but he was on my bad side more than my good. We use to be really close, all of us, when we were little but when the school district changed we all got split up.

"Well if it isn't my favorite person in the world. Oh hey, Cam is here too!"

I rolled my eyes while Jay laughed and his poor joke. See? He always did little stuff like this to irk my nerves.

He flashed his perfect smile at me and I knew he wanted something.

"What is it now Johnny Boy?"

"Sooo I'm kinda failing art AND Chem and I need a tutor."

Of course, he would be failing the two classes I'm great at. I took Chemistry last year and currently have an A in AP Chem.

"Johnathan Fields, you would have to pay good money for me to help you."

"Oh little one, you don't think I know that?" He smiled. "That's exactly why Daddy Fields is willing to pay you, oh and so is my dad."

"My god..."

"So are you gonna do it? Yes! Awesome, ok, I'll text you my address come right after school!"

"I never said yes..."

As soon as John basically waltzed away, glad he had a chance at passing his first semester classes, Jay burst into laughter.

"I know I know, but I need the money." She kept laughing.

"Stop it," I whined. "We have to get to class."

"He has a thing for you." Jay teased. I stopped dead in my tracks.

"No, he doesn't, we're barely even friends."

"Whatever you say, Cam. That boy is smitten." She wiggled her eyebrows and turned into her class.

Pfft, no way.
