The air that blew from the window left goosebumps on Toby's skin. It felt quite nice though, it eased his nerves. He had been laying on his bed for the past couple of hours staring at the ceiling, but in his defense time does fly.For the past two weeks, his friend had been acting so strange. Toby had met Tommy in the 7th grade which meant he had known him for three years now. He knew almost everything about him. Tommy showed Toby how to let loose and love himself, Toby had been so shy and awkward for the longest time until he had met Tommy. Tommy had been through so much with Toby. Tommy meant the world to Toby.
But now Tommy was acting different and it scared Toby. It made him want to pick his brains out. It didn't help that Tom wouldn't speak up about anything either. See, Tommy was always talking to Toby about everything. Tommy talked about what he had for dinner to his scary encounters with spiders that decided to pop out at him in the shower.
Even though Tommy said nothing to Toby about anything out of the ordinary, Toby knew something was wrong.
It started two weeks ago when Tommy had decided he didn't want to eat lunch with Toby, said he was feeling sick. Tommy continued to do this until Toby decided that he would bring lunch to the bathroom to hang out with Tom, he felt guilty just letting his friend sit in the restroom. But when Toby walked into the boy's restroom to check on him he was absolutely nowhere to be found.
When Toby tried confronting Tommy and asked where he had been, Tommy just told him he was at his locker and covered the confusion with a smile. On top of that Toby had walked over to Tommy's house and just when he was about to knock on the door he heard crying coming through the window from upstairs, which of course was Tommy's window.
Toby knocked on the door concerned. To his surprise, Tommy answered it, "Hey!" Tommy showed a bright smile. It was like he was acting as if nothing had happened at all.
Maybe it's all in my head
But how could it be? Especially if this is his best friend. Toby knew Tommy and this wasn't Tommy.
The next morning Toby quickly got dressed skipping his shower since he had one last night. He had decided that once and for all he was going to figure out what was going on with his best friend. Today was the day.
Toby jogged his way to school trying to get there before Tommy did, he knew that the school bus was quick and usually Toby would take his time cause he knew Tommy would wait for him but he wanted to prove a point.
Things were going according to plan as he arrived before the bus did, but then Tommy stepped out of the bus with a girl. A girl he had never seen before in his life.
A girl?
Is this why Tommy's been upset?
A secret girlfriend?
Toby marched over to the duo wanting answers immediately. He was about to go on a rampage of questions until he realized she was new. She was just a new student here, and Tommy had only met her today.
Dianne didn't seem like she knew Tommy that well anyway, she wasn't defensive like she had known him for a while and Toby had been interrupting them or anything. It was the person on the phone Tommy was talking to that caught Toby off guard.
Wilbur?
Didn't sound familiar.
The lunchroom was filled with nothing but laughter, yelling, and talking. The school's lunch was actually not half bad besides whatever the hell was in that jello.
"So how are you liking school, Dianne?" Tommy asked taking a sip of some coke.
"It's actually pretty good, better than what I was expecting" Dianne smiled. It really was going great for her first day.
"Yeah, it's not too bad here. Everyone pretty much keeps to themselves and stays out of trouble. There's a couple of dickheads that go here though, don't mind them." Toby took a bite of a carrot crunching loudly.
Tommy choked on a chip suddenly catching the other two off guard. "You alright Tommy?" Dianne asked concerned. "Yea are you ok?" Toby chimed in.
"Yea, I'm fine. I just need some water. It's in my locker, I'll be right back" Tommy quickly stood up and rushed away into the halls.
"That was odd" Dianne looked very confused. "You're telling me, he's been doing shit like this for weeks." Toby rolled his eyes.
"Should we follow him?" Dianne questioned with concern yet in a mischievous tone. Toby liked that tone because he really wanted to get down to the bottom of this.
The two abruptly got up from the table and stormed down the hall. Their shoes were clacking until they came to a stop. There was Tommy standing next to a boy who was slightly taller than him. Brown curly hair, and quite good looking.
"Didn't know there was anyone taller than Tommy that existed" Toby stated surprised. "Damn, why are those two so tall?" Dianne questioned genuinely curious.
The tall unfamiliar boy looked over to the two who were just staring at him and Tommy talking. The boy motioned his head towards Toby and Dianne making Tommy turn around.
"Oh hey, guys! Sorry to worry you like that, I'm all good now. But I'm glad everyone's in one spot" Tommy smiled motioning the duo to come over to him and his unmentioned friend.
"Dianne and Toby, this is Wilbur. Wilbur this is Toby and Dianne" Tommy introduced the three.
"Well hello, it's such a pleasure to meet you, Dianne," The now introduced boy spoke with a honey-coated tone. Wilbur's smile was a killer, Dianne was almost immediately charmed but she shook it off.
"Uh hi, It's nice to meet you, Wilbur!" Toby exclaimed with a bright smile excited to finally meet this friend of Tommy's he didn't know anything about. But to disappoint all Toby was greeted with a "Hi".
Wilbur's tone was ice cold when he spoke to Toby. Toby was completely caught off guard after Wilbur treated Dianne so nicely. He just sat there in shock as the other three conversated and acted like they didn't sense anything wrong at all. It was as if Toby wasn't even there and Wilbur had replaced him.
