The room wasn't as bright as usual. Dianne rolled over to look over at her clock, it read 10:02. She decided on getting up even though the weather was gloomy and cozy enough for her to sleep in even more.
She got ready for the day before walking downstairs to find her mom and grandma watching the news. "A snowstorm will be heading our way in just a few short hours. Be sure to keep indoors later for your new years eve. Roads will be closing as well as local stores..." The woman spoke on the television.
"So much for the hope of good weather" Her grandma rolled her eyes. "I was gonna go party"
"Mother, you're too old to be going out to things like that anymore anyway" Dianne's mom switched the channel. "You're never too old for anything!" Her grandma exclaimed walking into the kitchen.
Dianne frowned. She had planned to bring Wilbur his late Christmas gift since she wasn't able to see him during the holiday. Maybe she could make it before the storm started? It sounded like a ridiculous idea, if she didn't get back home in time she would be stuck in the storm. But, she really wanted to be able to give Wilbur his gift before the year ended.
She decided on going to Wilbur's house to give him the gift, his house was only a few blocks away anyway. Dianne grabbed her boots and slipped them on. About to leave out the door she was stopped by her mother. "Where are you going?" Her mother gave a quizzical look.
"I just wanted to give this gift to my friend, I promise I'll be back within the hour." Dianne quickly walked out slamming the door behind her accidentally. "Dianne!-" Her mother was cut off by the door.
Dianne started walking away from her house, she pulled out her phone turning on some music. Bad things by Cults played through her ears as her footsteps tapped against the concrete, not that she could hear though. The wind started growing stronger, blowing her hair into her face multiple times.
Finally, she had made it to Wilbur's house after a long walk through the freezing wind. She made her way up the stone steps and knocked in a pattern on his door. The doorknob started jiggling. "Hello? Can I help you?" It was a woman who had answered the door.
"Uh hi," Dianne smiled sheepishly. "I'm here for Wilbur? I brought a gift for him" She showed the woman the box. "Oh, how nice of you. He's not here right now though, you can come inside though if you'd like to wait" The woman offered. Dianne had never been inside Wilbur's house before, they usually just met up at a park or somewhere to hang out.
"Uh yeah, sure!" Dianne smiled, the woman moved to the side letting her in the house. The entranceway was grand with a chandelier hanging from the high ceiling. The floors were a smooth wood that was loud if you walked on it with shoes. "Wow, it's really nice in here" Dianne looked around the room and into the halls as well as the staircase.
"Thanks, dear, I paid a lot for this place" The woman picked up some keys making the jingle sound echo throughout the house. It was dead silent in there, so you could hear every little sound and every sound also made an echo. "So are you Wil's mum?" Dianne looked at the woman who had also picked up a purse.
"Yes, I'm Wilbur's mother" The woman flashed a smile. She was wearing an emerald green silk party dress along with a fur coat, her whole look made her seem elegant. "I'm going to be heading out for a new years party tonight but feel free to help yourself to anything in the fridge and make yourself at home, Wilbur will be here soon I'm sure." The woman waved and walked out the door before Dianne could mutter a word.
That was interesting...
Dianne looked over to the kitchen then looked back to the front door. "She doesn't even know me and she just left me here..." Dianne spoke lowly. For sure she thought Wilbur would think she was some creep who just snuck into his house or something ridiculous. She walked over to the sofa and took a seat, surely Wilbur would be here any minute.
Turns out Wilbur was not there a minute later, or five minutes, or ten minutes, nor twenty. Dianne slumped down on the sofa, she pulled out her phone checking the time. Thirty minutes had passed without Wilbur showing up. Getting bored Dianne stood up, looking over to the kitchen.
She did say to make myself at home I guess...
Dianne walked over to the kitchen, there was a dining table set up with eight chairs as if it was set up for a huge family. Modern lights hung above the kitchen island and there was a huge fridge as well. "Wow..." She had no idea Wilbur had money like this.
She wandered back into the living room, her eyes moving straight to the staircase.
No Dianne. No snooping, that's intrusive.
She shook her head and started walking towards the couch, that is until she stopped.
A little peek wouldn't hurt, right?
She would be really quick, she'd be so quick she would be back on the sofa before Wilbur would get back. She walked over to the stairs slowly but walked up them quickly and quietly. Once she made it to the second story she looked to see a hall that had a couple of rooms until it curved to the right where she supposed there were more rooms.
She walked past the first room, the door was open. From what she could see there was a king-sized bed with a pale pink comforter. It was clearly Wilbur's mother's room, there was a washroom just right next to it. Then there was an office, which also had the door open. A nice PC was set up on the desk along with other decorations in the room.
Dianne made her way to the last room from the first part of the hall. This room's door was closed. She contemplated whether or not to open it or not, her hand on the doorknob.
Just when she was about to open it there was noise from the other side of the hall. She jumped away from the door as she saw the door to another washroom opening.
It was Wilbur. Wilbur was home after all, and of course, he had just gotten out of the shower.
"Dianne?" Wilbur was shocked, his hair sopping wet and dripping down him. He quickly looked down to the towel on his waist then looked back up at her, his face basically pouring with embarrassment.
"Wil!- I'm so sorry I didn't-" She quickly looked away to the opposite wall.
I thought he wasn't here?!
"No no- uh- just let me get dressed, one second-" Wilbur rushed back into the washroom, slamming the door behind him.
Jesus Christ, why did his mom say he wasn't here?!
Dianne mentally slapped herself. She felt utterly idiotic, if she had known Wilbur was here, let alone in the shower, she wouldn't have ever moved from that sofa.
