The night felt colder and darker than usual, without his friends around Tommy was feeling severely alone. It had been two weeks since he and Toby had spoken. Winter break was almost over and Tommy had basically spent the whole thing in his room. Well, and his backyard if you count picking up dog poo.
He sat on the floor leaning up against his bed, a long heavy sigh leaving his mouth. He pulled out his phone opening up Instagram. He started watching people's stories, most of them were just random people he knew at college.
"Stupid" He muttered after watching some girl go on a rant about how she wanted to impress some guy. Tommy made a mental note to unfollow her later. "Alex no!" it was Toby's voice. "C'mon Toby get over here!" the Alex guy was chasing him around him some whipped pie.
Tommy clicked off of Toby's story as fast as he could. Toby had been posting about his new friends nonstop and frankly, Tommy was really tired of it. It made him feel sad and lonely.
It wasn't that Tommy didn't want to speak to Toby, it was the fact that Tommy felt replaced, and real quick too.
I mean really, he replaced me in just a few days
Not only was Toby not speaking to him, but he hadn't spoken much to Wilbur either. They had texted a couple of times, Tommy apologized for blowing up on him the other day, but other than that he only saw Wilbur strolling around with Dianne around the neighborhood.
Dianne had actually texted Tommy a few times to ask how he was and if he wanted to join her and Wilbur, but Tommy always declined. Those two acted like they had serious crushes on each other and Tommy didn't feel like being a third wheel. He wouldn't have to if Toby was around.
He put his phone down and slumped all the way onto the floor. "This is shitty" There was a knock at the door. "Tom," It was his mom, she opened the door. "You alright hon? You've been cooped up in here the whole day" She frowned walking over to her son.
"I'm fine mum" Tommy lied. "Just tired"
Yea tired of being ditched.
"Hey, you know I haven't seen Toby come over in a while. Why don't you invite him over? Maybe that will brighten your mood" She suggested smiling.
"Mum," Tommy sighed. "I don't think me and Toby are friends anymore" His tone was sad.
His mother's smile dropped. "Well, why would you think that?"
"He found new friends and we don't talk anymore" Tommy explained. He really didn't want to talk about this anymore. "Hey mum, I'm gonna get ready for bed ok?"
"Ok... Well, I'm sorry to hear about Toby." She frowned. "If you change your mind I'm watching criminal minds in the living room if you feel like joining"
"Thanks, mum, but I'll pass" Tommy gave a weak smile. "Alright, well I love you. Goodnight sweetie" She blew a kiss to her son before walking out of the room. Tommy had to close the door behind her because she was a typical mom and left it open.
"Maybe some sleep will do me some good after all"
And that's what Tommy did, plopped into his bed and drifted off to sleep trying to suppress his sadness over his friend.
"Guys, do we really have to watch a horror movie?" Nick asked grabbing a blanket from the hall cupboard. "Yes, nick, don't be a scaredy-cat" Karl grabbed the bowl of popcorn.
Toby was spending the night at Karl's house along with Nick, Alex, and Clay. The group had planned it last week, since new years eve was the next day it would be a double night so it could be a big celebration , and now of course it was finally happening. "What movie is it?" Alex asked plopping onto the couch and grabbing some popcorn from the bowl.
"The conjuring two" Karl said simply, clicking on the movie. "C'mon, isn't there anything else?" Nick pleaded. "Nope" Karl popped the P.
The movie was starting. Nick held the blanket he had grabbed earlier close to his body while Alex and Karl kept fighting over who got the most buttery pieces of popcorn. But where was Clay? Come to think of it, it had been at least thirty minutes since Toby had seen him.
No one else seemed to notice that Clay wasn't in the room though. Toby glanced over at his friends who were into the movie. He decided to go find Clay. "Gonna go use the washroom, be right back" He stood up walking towards the hall. "Ok!" Alex called. "Hey, gimme that piece Karl!"
Toby wandered down the hall in search of Clay, so far nowhere to be found. He found himself at the end of the hall, the last room in front of him. He figured he had no option but to at least check. "Clay?" Toby called quietly as he slowly opened the door.
There he was, he quickly turned his head over to Toby. "Hey Toby" Clay gave a fake smile, Toby could tell. "What's the matter? You don't wanna watch the movie?" Toby asked walking over to him. "Eh, not really..." Clay trailed off. "You wanna talk about it?" Toby sat down next to him.
"It's just," Clay sighed. "George. It just doesn't seem right. Everyone else just wrote him off as an asshole who just decided to leave without saying anything, but I don't think it's true" He explained, his tone becoming frustrated. "Well, what do you think happened?" Toby questioned curiously.
"I'm not really sure, but what I do know is George would never do that. He was close to all of us, he wouldn't just leave like that." Clay looked confused.
"Was he acting any different before he left?" Toby asked wondering if maybe he could help Clay figure out why George had left.
"No, that's the thing he wasn't acting any different" Clay looked Toby in the eyes.
"Interesting.." Toby trailed off. "Was he talking to anyone unusual?"
"Not really, he usually just tutored some kid after school and then there was this one guy who kept bothering him about something, but that guy wasn't gonna hurt a fly. What was his name again? William? No, that can't be right. Uh... Wilbur? Yes, that's it" Clay explained.
"Wilbur?" Toby was genuinely confused. First Tommy hid his friendship with Wilbur from Toby and now he was being brought up in some situation with this guy named George who apparently all of a sudden disappeared?
"Yea, you know him or something?" Clay questioned tilting his head.
"Actually, I do" Toby stared at Clay, realization hitting him.
