It was July the 14th, the weather was warm, traffic was heavy, the gossip about the shooting had died down, Delano was trying to make up for the money he lost, and kids were enjoying their summer vacation. Ava was having brunch with Kayla and Michelle, the twins were at their beach house, Assyria was at the movies with Dante and Ary. Kairo was attending physical therapy with Kelly, Renae was home with King, and then there was Dajon at the office talking with Von.
"You still don't know what this new dude looks like?" Dajon queried, staring at Von.
"My inside man just said he's brown skin with locs," Von chuckled, "He did say, that dude was intimidating."
Dajon sucked his teeth, "Do you know how many black people walk around this bitch with dreads?"
"Just telling you what he said," amused, Von helped himself to a bag of candy, "But I do think your in-law put him in there, 'cause he does not like Delano's ass at all."
"I asked bro, he said he ain't got nothing to do with it."
Von tilted his head, "And you believed him?"
Dajon shrugged, "He ain't gon' lie to me about something like that. My sister gave him a warning and obviously, he took heed to it," Dajon laughed, knowing that Renae meant every word about putting King out.
"Yo sister is... scary," Von admitted.
"Glad you know, now back to stubby man, what we doing 'bout him?"
"Right now, just letting my inside man do his job, but we do know that he had involvement in the shooting."
"But," Dajon cut in, "You tryna wait for the big shit."
"I know you wanna knock him for your nephew, but if we can get him for a few other murders and maybe catch him in the act of picking up a shipment or delivering the drugs, that'll be better."
Dajon nodded, "I'm following yo lead but I ain't tryna be on this for no damn three or six months. I would have liked to get that nigga last damn week."
Von laughed, "A'ight killer,"
Dajon cut his eyes at him then leaned forward.
"I will say tho..." Von trailed off momentarily, "I guess it's a good thing Kwan sent his son away, Carmen was gonna try to haul him up."
Dajon turned toward him, "Hold up, I told her not to try it."
"I told you how they operate," Von reminded, "But she was gonna try to use him to get info on Delano."
"Well, now her ass can't. Talk to your buddies or I'ma start accidentally leaking shit."
Von stared at Dajon long and hard then stood, "Davidson, you know you can't do that."
"Then make sure her ass leaves my family alone."
Sighing, Von nodded and picked up his jacket, "Be good and don't do anything I wouldn't do. I'll hit you later."
"Yeah, yeah," Dajon waved him off and walked around his desk, "Get home to your family."
Von smiled, opening the door, "You do the same."
"You a hard man to find," Jacob said as he and Delano walked up on Lucky as he leaned against his wooden fence.
He was dressed down in a black t-shirt with a picture of Too Short in the center, shorts, his locs were wrapped into a high bun, his tattoo-covered arms were on full display and his brown skin glowed effortlessly in the sun. On his feet, he rocked a pair of low-top chucks with two gold chains around his neck.
